Great price for a 4TB drive. 5400 RPM, so don't expect it to be too zippy. But great for bulk storage or backup. $15 per TB is about as good as it gets. Thanks for posting, OP.

These drives are on sale for a reason. I would not buy them even it sounds pretty good deal. At the end, SMR drives are not for NAS....FYI.

I saw that in the reviews as well. WD got called out on it big time. I doubt that any profit they made marketing these as NAS drives was worth the hit to their reputation.

I've added some information to the wiki so that hopefully, someone considering these for their NAS/RAID setup reconsiders, as SMR drives aren't recommended for this use-case due to their write speed. It's a shame, because this is an extremely good price for a fairly high-capacity drive, and would be pretty decent if just storing some data. It's just not great in a critical application like what they're being marketed for, which is exactly where Western Digital failed to inform their customers properly when they started putting SMR drives into their Red line. Western Digital's Red CMR NAS drives are fine however.

SMR is okay for media storage as long as it isn't in a RAID array. If you use unRAID these are okay as a data drive, but not for the parity or cache.

It looks like WD has reserved that Red Pro/Plus name for their CMR drives. On Newegg, at least you can kinda filter them out by searching for Red CMR, like this [newegg.com]. After Western Digital got caught out on this, they have been better-labelled. Not fantastically labelled, but better. Other manufacturer's have followed suit, by clearly labelling the technology they use for storing data in their drives as well, so, you can put that into search to help narrow down just CMR drives. This search [newegg.com] is decent, but will include drives from all over the spectrum. You'll want to do your own research before buying.

You can get "Red Plus"... and not just a "Red". "Red Plus" is CMR.
