Don't expect to be able to keep this plugged in 24/7. On my server I never reboot, I've had it corrupt a drive twice forcing me to do a diskpart clean to get it back. Seems to be a common problem.
I've seen a handful of these RTL9210B enclosures around the sub 25 dollar range from SSK, Inateck, Fideco. I even saw another brand for less than 20 with an active coupon.
However, most of these enclosures I've noticed are the side out design.
I went with this enclosure over the other options due to this. Sabrent works better since the top lifts off and there is less potential of damaging the heat pad.
I have two of these and they've been very stable with several hours of active usage, but I haven't tested for 24/7 usage. I highly suggest updating the firmware right away to help fix any issues.

You can find the update firmware for the chipset here:
https://www.sabrent.com/download/ec-snve/

There are newer chipset firmware not from Sabrent, but I haven't tested those out yet. There is a thread on Anandtech forums about various chipsets version firmware and where to download them. It's a long thread, but it gives a lot of details about the RTL9210 chipset and the fixes the firmware versions have made.

Hope this helps!

I installed linux mint 20 on this, and when hooked up to gen2 interface, when the operating system is hammered, it faults out to command line with hard drive errors. Just a heads up if you're gonna use linux on this. Used two different nvme drives, from two different manufacturers. adata 8200 pro, and sk hynix p31

I second this. Macrium Reigns supreme, and is fairly easy to use. The free version should get it done for you as well.
Third Macrium Reflect. I cloned my Gen 3 drive to Gen 4. However, be warned you might have issues with booting like I did. This resolved the issue https://superuser.com/questions/1...ot-windows

I bought a similar looking O r i c o enclosure from Newegg when the Intel 670p nvme was on sale. Same chipset, worked fine to clone off the oem Samsung drive then I swapped them. I put the old 256gb oem drive into the enclosure. It does get warm with use. I dislike the rubber peg thing, but at least mine came with 2. The O r i c o one was $18. It also came with 2 usb cables, a C to C and a C to A.

Doesn't work with Samsung magician because it shows up as a Realtek device. So I had to use other cloning methods which wasn't a big deal. Also when the Intel drive was in here, it wasn't recognized by the Intel drive utility either. So you can't use these to do firmware updates etc that need direct drive access.

edit - it kept blocking out the brand name so I put spaces in it. Why SD? You no like them?

It will work like any external hard drive. If you want it to work with both mac os and windows, format it with a compatible file system or use two different partitions.

Can you provide an example heatsink that would work for this enclosure? A generic "NVMe heatsink" amazon search gives you a wide range of products that seemingly have different sizes. I wouldn't know which heatsink would work with this enclosure.

I left the top cover half open to accommodate the heatsink. Mine connects with the desktop all the time so it remains seated. I got one that is "PS5 compatible". I'll double check when I have time.

The enclosure has a nice big heatsink pre-applied.

Nein. It has a so called sandwich design which is just a heating pad beneath the top cover. I was looking at NVME enclosures and there's even ones that have a small cooling fan preinstalled. All of those had mixed reviews. If the heating pad has insufficient contact on both sides it's got to be problematic. Can't really count on having the perfect seal.

I'll take your word for it I guess. I had no issues with temps, even when hammering it on a adata 8200 pro. However, your mileage may vary.

perfectly happy with this $18.80 one from Amazon...
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0892BK5L6

sabrent is an ok brand but there is usually a reason why amazon put on a 'sale'.

like other warned, M.2 is a shape/size that describes both SATA type and NVME type SSD

this is NVME type, not the SATA type

The Realtek RTL9210 chipset is NVME only while the RTL9210B does both NVME and SATA which is what this Sabrent has.

I read through the anandtech forum and ended up flashing mine from 1.23.5 to 1.25.7 and it's been rock solid. I also have a Ugreen enclosure that also has a RTL9210B that was having issues so I flashed that to 1.25.7 as well and it's fine.

It's a long read but basically all you need to know about the different chipsets and issues as well as firmware versions. Here are the drivers and configs to use for the RT9210(B) https://www.station-drivers.com/i...ang,en-gb/
