I saw that you said not to move the SIM but thought you meant not to move it from the TF to the TW phone right off the bat. I didn't realize you still couldn't do it after activating the phone with the SIM it came with. Thanks for the clarification.

Target currently has the SE on Total Wireless for $250 with a $150 gift card if you activate in store (making the phone essentially $100), but the Tracfone version is $289 with a $140 gift card, making the TF version $150. I thought you could save the additional $50 difference if you were on Tracfone by buying the TW version but that doesn't seem to be the case.
Safest is to activate on TW & get it unlocked first. After that get $1 BYOP sim kit and switch phone to whatever TF (or any other) network you want.

OK, yeah the more evidence starts piling up, hopefully a clear winner will emerge. Rougher edge probably more likely to be from replacement

Actually, I just noticed that Thchan said that he had two different screens and the yellower one looked perfect, whIle the less yellow one showed slight scratches (as a used / original one would), so that seems like another indication that the more yellow one would more likely be the replaced screen.

One more experiment to try … pull up a screen of all-black (maybe open a pic of a pure black background) and turn the brightness of the screen all the way up (I'd turn auto brightness and True Tone off for both to avoid possible differences). See if one appears to be a more true black (or brighter edges, unevenness, etc.) I've heard that can sometimes be a clue on aftermarket screens.

actually, i might not be as clear/specific as i should have been, my bad:
1. the yellowish screen has a very minor hairline scratch, but the screen is flushed with the phone with no sign of replacement.
2. the less yellowish screen has no scratch, but the metal phone frame has scratches at the bottom edge, plus the bottom side of the screen seems to be not totally flushed with the frame, indicating screen replacement was done.
so i am Confused

It's been 2 days and I still don't have a notice indicating my order shipped. How long did you have to wait to get a shipping notice? Free "2 day" shipping is pretty useless if they wait a week to ship it.

They don't ship on weekends.
Mine is waiting for UPS pickup since 14th but should finally ship on Monday & says delivery Tuesday. Likely will be Weds.

If you are not concerned about a 60 day unlock wait, you can sim swap any TF sim (TF, Simple, Total W, Page Plus, WM Family, Net10) and the phone works fine. I do it often.

Got shipping notice on two phones ordered the other day. Checked the serial number and one says October 2022 and another says April 2022. I'm kind of worried that April 2022 one is going to be trashed.

Does anyone know if Apple cares about after market parts on trade ins? Like are they only going to check the screen is good and it powers on? Or will they open it and look inside as well?
They don't need to open it up to check, they have special tech software that scans and verifies it against their records on that device, all they have to do is connect and scan the device. Even if they don't you sign agreement saying if they find such parts later they have a right to go after you. Out of all places you can trade in Apple is the one who can check it the most and find something, rest probably just check for no cracks.

I didn't say it wouldn't work temporarily.
I said Verizon has started contacting users if sim is not correctly registered to phone it is being used in. Said they could pull service if sim was used in wrong phone & to put sim back in original phone. This was for TF using Verizon (TF using ATT/T-Mo aren't registered to a specific phone).
It's safe to assume TF VZ will now be enforcing correctly registered sims on both TF & TW (TF has let it slide in the past, I've also used one in different phone for several months but it was a yr ago).

Up to each user if they want to chance it since things are no longer guaranteed to work the way they did before Verizon bought the company.
I don't want someone coming back later & blaming me because they got bad info & messed up their phone.

Thanks for the clarification. Yep, based on that info, it sounds like the more yellow tinted screen would be the OEM one. If it was brand new, I doubt there would be any scratch at all on the screen. And if the frame of the other one is scuffed up but the glass looks brand new, that definitely sounds like a replacement. Hopefully all the clues will come together for a definitive way to tell as more people report in.

Out of the 3 XRs I've received, only 1 of the 3 is original OEM screen. I just compared to my dad's XR bought from Apple 2 years ago. The original screen is more yellow than replaced screens. This oem screen has some scratchs and used wears in the back. You can definitely tell it is used and battery is 100%. This is the xr I will keep to replace my 7+.
The other 2, 1 has cracked screen and another is replaced confirmed by Apple. Both are very pure white and more bright. I just filed paypal claims on these 2 phones since tw rep is so difficult to deal with and refused to provide return shipping.

Can highly recommend using PayPal for purchasing anything from TW/TF or Google, has saved me a lot of frustration when things go wrong & support doesn't follow through in a timely manner.

Cool … thanks for weighing in. It sounds like the more yellow screen may be a good sign as far as the OEM screen goes.

Do you think you could capture the difference in a couple of pics from the edge of the phones for comparison? I have heard that the aftermarket screens can be slightly thicker than OEM, so that might be one way to tell the difference.

I want to use it with my post-paid Verizon plan. Looks like I activate it, wait for 60 days (no need to add a second month of service or pay anything more), call them to unlock and then put in my Verizon SIM? Would this work?

Or could I use the rsim technique to unlock right away?

And could I trade it in to Verizon for a $800 credit right away (towards iphone 13)?

I get what you are saying. So far, so good with sim swapping to date. I'm hoping this 60 day unlock process will work without a hitch, especially since TF is adamant about the 12 months requirement.

Just hope they don't screw with your IMEI/sim, Howard Forums had several reports of people inserting different sim & phone auto relinked to new sim (never heard of that before) which would affect unlock.
That's why I'm uncomfortable with swapping sims now, things are unpredictable.
