If you've used an e-ink reader and can honestly say that you see no difference between e-ink and a cellphone, well then more power to you. Don't waste your money.

Personally, I'd rather poke myself in the eye with a fork than try to read a novel on a cellphone.

Would it be worth trading in a Paperwhite 2 from 2014 for this regular but newer Kindle?
This exactly what I did last fall...I had a six year old KPW, and upgraded/DOWNgraded to the newest regular Kindle with backlight. I LOVE it. Screen resolution was actually a slight upgrade to my old KPW. Battery life has been great. I also preferred the form factor and feel of the newest regular Kindle to the last gen KPW...that opinion has changed slightly since the recent release of the latest KPW, but really, the current generation of the regular Kindle is a SOLID e-reader for the money.

These are okay. The latest gen, with 300 pppi and the warm light are much nicer (got my 9 yo one of these, and myself one of the latest gen on black friday). That being said, it's a great price if you'll be satisfied with the display on this one.
yes, but this generation doest have the glare like the new models do

Is this worse resolution than a last gen paper white?

Where can I check which version I have. I have the one I think 9th gen or 10th, but response osnpretty slow, sometimes ot changes page instead lf highlight, and sometimes I can't tell if it turned the page forward or back because sometimes it doesn't register swipe properly. Otherwise it's an amazing reader, highlight, word search for definition, Wikipedia, etc great but I wish they had a bit better version for basic reading.
There is also no dark mode, even if you lower backlight to 1, it's bright, not crazy bright but inverted colors would be better.

Do these things have tricks to remove the ads in the same way that the Amazon Fire tablets do?

Doesn't the Paperwhite have physical buttons? I'd keep it just for that.

These aren't the paperwhites though. I don't get why you would get a non paperwhite kindle

I've never understood why people stress about the ads on the Kindle. They never appear while you are reading a book. Never.

And I'm certainly not an Amazon defender .. the ads are a real issue on Fire tablets and Alexa devices (especially Show). But on Kindle, they are a non-issue.

How much was the Paperwhite on Black Friday?
I paid $75 plus tax for paperwhite gen 10 last October at Target. Best Buy had the same price then.
I did not pay attention to price on Black Friday. I bought it before Black Friday.

I admit I haven't had one of these in my hands, but as I understand it they're pretty similar to the 1st gen Paperwhite (the major difference being that this one has a somewhat lower resolution). $50 vs $140 is a pretty big difference. If I was strapped for cash I think I'd much rather have the regular Kindle than no Kindle at all.

Not really, but if you never connect it to wifi then it will never load itself with ads and thus never show you ads. I don't find lack of wifi to be a very big sacrifice seeing as how I can load it with years worth of reading by plugging it into my pc for five minutes.
