Never listen to the manufacturer recommended age range. I brought these for myself at 32 y/o and didn't even get hurt.
The battery contacts were really finicky so I had to unscrew it and screw it back on before it started working.
I have a 6 month old and he could barely get his hands around it. 9 months+ seems more realistic for self play.
