Exact opposite for me.
You can buy a Roku or Fire stick for super cheap. You talk like using the TVs platform is mandatory or something. Purchasing a TV based off its operating system is probably the dumbest thing you could prioritize.
I dare you to throw away everything you own that's Made in China, in fact I'll double dare you LMAO

Wasn't this $499 last year? 25% inflation in one year? There must be a sucker born every minute.

Slick deals is so interesting

No matter the picture quality...a $399 65" TV will make front page and a $599 75" TV will make front page

If you don't like it, don't buy it. I bet you're one of those "audiophiles" who shits on every headphone set under $500 because your "sophisticated ear" is insulted by "pedestrian garbage"?

Got something to say, say it, otherwise go hug your Sony.

I have already said what I said.....not sure how you missed that?

As for buying anything I dont like...why would anyone , except in the combination of absolute necessity and a strained financial situation...nod

Agreed, buy it for the specs first and the OS second. You can always turn it into a "dumb" TV by launching to an HDMI port by default.

The only downsides I've found to Android TV are the slightly slower cold boot (if you have "fast tv start" enabled, Roku and Android start up the same) the fact that there's no native private listening mode on Android (easily rectified by the fact that Android sets have Bluetooth built in).

Other than that, it 100% comes down to the hardware the manufacturer decides to throw in it, which in many cases, is identical on both platforms (they're all using the latest ARM processors; the Roku TVs usually have less RAM available for user processes).

If you're into tweaking every available setting on your device, Android TV wins hands down.

Roku OS hides most of the advanced picture settings and locks you out of the manufacturer service menu, which is why hotel TVs with Roku can't be taken out of hotel mode.

I don't know about the technical details, but I can tell you that I've had several budget TVs of various brands with built in Roku and all work perfectly with no lag. Only bought one Android TV and it will be the last one. I constantly have to tinker with it, optimize, clear apps, and there's still hopeless lag and frequent crashes.

The backlight on my 65" 4-series went out the weekend of the college football championship game (and I'm a UGA fan). I called around and it's going to be about $250 to get it fixed but he said he gets a lot of calls for the same issue, and even if he fixes it, 2-3 years tops (which is what I got out of it before it died) before it will likely die again. I actually loved the TV...fantastic colors and brightness to my eyes and the price was great....but I don't want to throw money down a well.

Can anyone make me feel better about maybe the 5 or 6 series and their components? Not sure I trust the 4-series, after hearing how many people have had the same issue.

I've fixed many TCL sets. It happens to all of them. It's almost like it's value engineered to break after so many hours, or just outside a two year warranty. Sooner if the set gets a lot of use. At first it was always the timing control boards. Now I'm seeing the LED backlights dying, which is odd as these LEDs should last 10-15 years. Always, always pay for an extended 3+ year warranty. Or buy from Costco with their Visa. I was a big fan of TCL from 2013-2018, but not so much anymore. I'm also seeing older Samsung 1080p sets that rival the TCL R series in picture quality. Quality has gone downhill over the years in favor of high volume sales. Flagship sets today are equivalent to mid tier sets several years ago. The PC boards are a quarter the size. The hear sinks are almost non existent, which is a major issue and probably the root cause of failures. They are built to be disposable. 2-4 year lifespan.

Roku is horrible. At least with android you have options to change. Besides, as destruct pointed out, you can buy media devices and having loaded thousands of them, I can tell you definitely buy amazon fire devices or a Nvidia not roku.

Lol, spot on. I'd like to see some of these "experts" blind test on different models. Most think they can tell the difference but really just love one brand or another. Like politics, probably handed down from their parents who knew very little to begin with.

Electronics technology advances so quick. I once kept a Sony for 8 years because it still worked fine however, when a bought a replacement I realized what I was missing holding on to it. If you can afford it buy new every 4 years at least.

what?...Are you speaking performance wise

So a Sony Z9F or A90J is the equivalent of one of their mid tier from years ago

If you think that is the case we are going to have to agree to disagree

If you bought at or near the top of the line 8 years ago
That picture is still going to be great compared to what is available today in the low to mid range offerings

granted..no HDMI 2.1 etc etc
However great color accuracy, panel uniformity and motion , done well, still hold up well today

Hey guy with a crater in his skull where a brain's supposed to be: the phone you're typing on to say that or the computer are made in China. So is virtually everything in the world. Feel free to buy a TV "Made in The USA" and let us know how that process goes.
