The only downsides I've found to Android TV are the slightly slower cold boot (if you have "fast tv start" enabled, Roku and Android start up the same) the fact that there's no native private listening mode on Android (easily rectified by the fact that Android sets have Bluetooth built in).
Other than that, it 100% comes down to the hardware the manufacturer decides to throw in it, which in many cases, is identical on both platforms (they're all using the latest ARM processors; the Roku TVs usually have less RAM available for user processes).
If you're into tweaking every available setting on your device, Android TV wins hands down.
Roku OS hides most of the advanced picture settings and locks you out of the manufacturer service menu, which is why hotel TVs with Roku can't be taken out of hotel mode.
I don't know about the technical details, but I can tell you that I've had several budget TVs of various brands with built in Roku and all work perfectly with no lag. Only bought one Android TV and it will be the last one. I constantly have to tinker with it, optimize, clear apps, and there's still hopeless lag and frequent crashes.
Can anyone make me feel better about maybe the 5 or 6 series and their components? Not sure I trust the 4-series, after hearing how many people have had the same issue.
I've fixed many TCL sets. It happens to all of them. It's almost like it's value engineered to break after so many hours, or just outside a two year warranty. Sooner if the set gets a lot of use. At first it was always the timing control boards. Now I'm seeing the LED backlights dying, which is odd as these LEDs should last 10-15 years. Always, always pay for an extended 3+ year warranty. Or buy from Costco with their Visa. I was a big fan of TCL from 2013-2018, but not so much anymore. I'm also seeing older Samsung 1080p sets that rival the TCL R series in picture quality. Quality has gone downhill over the years in favor of high volume sales. Flagship sets today are equivalent to mid tier sets several years ago. The PC boards are a quarter the size. The hear sinks are almost non existent, which is a major issue and probably the root cause of failures. They are built to be disposable. 2-4 year lifespan.
Seriously?!, Roku is the worst smart TV platform out-there. Android is waay better.

Lol, spot on. I'd like to see some of these "experts" blind test on different models. Most think they can tell the difference but really just love one brand or another. Like politics, probably handed down from their parents who knew very little to begin with.
Electronics technology advances so quick. I once kept a Sony for 8 years because it still worked fine however, when a bought a replacement I realized what I was missing holding on to it. If you can afford it buy new every 4 years at least.
So a Sony Z9F or A90J is the equivalent of one of their mid tier from years ago

However great color accuracy, panel uniformity and motion , done well, still hold up well today
