Grabbed one last week sold by Amazon.com. I successfully flashed it to the 1.02MK firmware using this USB adadpter:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product...UTF8&psc=1

and was able to rip a UHD title with MakeMKV.

Keep in mind that if you have a 12th gen Intel, you won't be able to use this to play standard or 4K Blu-ray movies on your PC because Intel removed some required HDCP security thing from their newest chips (citing that the HDCP handshake protocol is a security vulnerability).

I'm surprised at how expensive Blu-ray drives are, but I guess I shouldn't be. Optical disc technology for consumers is probably near death unless it gets a last gasp from something like a 300 GB 8K UHD Blu-ray [flatpanelshd.com].

'Check to see it works, as QC is suspect.'

He means the workmanship is sometimes crappy. So, just as long as it works, then it is "best bang-for-the-buck", he's saying.

This is blu-ray rewriter. You updated the firmware and able to read 4K? That would be amazing.
Yes, the big sell for this drive is it's "UHD Friendly" and easily flashed to a firmware that can read UHD:

I did the same also. Plus you can also play 4k movies if you install leawoo bluray player.

With intel dropping 4K support is this going to be limited in its usefulness?

I did not expect this thing still could be SD again 😅
You're an idiot.

If anyone has a pile of 3.5" floppies, I actually need some. Supporting NT4 is a bear.

The stupidity in this thread is infinite. Guys, if you don't know what you are talking about either ask or move on.

4K IS Blu-ray. Same technology. That you think they're two different things just shows how successful the industry is in separating the two in order for you to pay more for "4K discs." Blu-ray drives are crippled by default for the sole purpose of antipiracy.

The post just says "without software" so I'm a bit confused at what software is needed
Ah. If you like to use this drive to play BR movies, etc., then you will need a software like PowerDVD, Corel WinDVD, etc. This sale is only for the drive only without any drivers, cables, software to play BR movies.
This drive does not have native support to detect or play 4K movies.

Are there any alternative drives or models that are more stable than the one for sale? Primary objective is to have something where I can remove region lock /rip to Blu Ray so I can view the actual movie.

I also just got this drive and have successfully flashed it to 1.02 using this guide for UHD ripping with MakeMKV. Ripped my first UHD with it too for confirmation.

I flashed it using the internal SATA interface though.

Yes, and no. It is Bluray, but 4k discs typically (always?) are two or three layer with shorter bit lengths. Your drive must be capable of reading a multi-layer disk with the shorter pit lengths in order to be able to ready a 4K Bluray. Not every Bluray player has the hardware capability to read a disk with the shorter pit lengths.

In this case, the drive itself has the hardware to be able to read a multilayer 4K Bluray disk, but it is disabled by firmware to differentiate the product with one that is capable sold for a higher price. Updating with third-party firmware gives access to it back.

Last year someone posted a VHS/DVD combo player, and all hell broke loose.

The price is back to $270 now [walmart.com]
