Keep in mind that if you have a 12th gen Intel, you won't be able to use this to play standard or 4K Blu-ray movies on your PC because Intel removed some required HDCP security thing from their newest chips (citing that the HDCP handshake protocol is a security vulnerability).

Wanna bet? I can put any resolution video onto a Blu ray disk and any other data that's not even video
"UHD 4K" is dictated by the bluray standard. You can put a video with some lame chinese encoding on the disc but that doesn't make it "bluray". You need some custom Ling Ling player to watch the video.
I dont think anyone uses a bluray drive to watch movies from a physical disc. DRM pretty much killed the legitimate way of watching movies on a PC. The drives are used to rip movies and watched without the DRM/secure path. That Intel is dumping DRM support pretty much confirms that no one will be complaining.
I tried using this to rip movies to put into my Plex server. Needless to say, it's much easier to just pay to use someone else's server. It takes HOURS to import just one movie. I'd rather save time than money in this case.

I'm not sure what you're doing but ripping with MakeMKV doesn't take that long. Re-encoding with Handbrake takes a while though.

You definitely don't know what you're doing if it takes "hours" for just one movie. 4K takes 1-1:15 hours to rip and 2 minutes for MakeMKV to extract just the movie/audio/subtitles.

Ah, you know you lost the argument that's why you resort to personal attacks. The bet is still open though, but you would 100% lose the bet
Yes, and no. It is Bluray, but 4k discs typically (always?) are two or three layer with shorter bit lengths. Your drive must be capable of reading a multi-layer disk with the shorter pit lengths in order to be able to ready a 4K Bluray. Not every Bluray player has the hardware capability to read a disk with the shorter pit lengths.
In this case, the drive itself has the hardware to be able to read a multilayer 4K Bluray disk, but it is disabled by firmware to differentiate the product with one that is capable sold for a higher price. Updating with third-party firmware gives access to it back.

If so, I'm wondering if the prices for these will continue to fall.

Trying to convince myself to update my reliable DVD burner but just can't do it yet.
The discussion on M disks is a good one. However, be advised they are not cheap.
I use USB sticks, DVDs, and HDs to record archives. Hopefully one of them will work.
I do have a question? The Pioneer units on Amazon! Are they as good as the Pioneer BDR-S09J?
