It's not a valid question, rather, an incomplete question. 8GB is plenty for many use cases provided you are occasionally willing to close programs. In other cases, 16GB is not enough.

The conundrum is that much of the services are now asynchronous (runs in the background) and it takes 4GB just to keep Windows 11 running from startup.

The real question is whether a Windows laptop will operate well in 2-3 years on 8GB as more background services are coded into the OS.
Minimum 16GB ram needed in 2022, if you run virtual machines for work and study. This would be a killer deal even at $999 if it had 16GB ram.
Yeah, it's 5 better.

Not true for everyone. I've had my surface pro going on 4 years and kickstand works as good as day one.
I agree with you, my Surfaces have always been flawless too. I guess Surface haters gotta hate.

If you need the 2-in-1 design plus pen support then this, for anything else go with the MacBook, it's actually cheaper and raw performance is much better with M1. MacBooks last a long time, whereas Windows laptop hardware doesn't age as well with Windows updates, Apple has track record of supporting older devices effectively.
My Surface Pro 2 is still working terrifically. In fact, I still think the Wacom pen tech in the Surface Pro 2 (Intel Haswell i5 with 8GB RAM and 512GB storage) is better than Surface Pro 3-7.

Surface Pro 4 was a dog because of Skylake (Skylake was the reason Apple decided to dump Intel).

My Surface Pro 2017 is still great today (i7, 8GB, 256GB). I even run my PC VR headsets on this (Samsung Odyssey and Odyssey+). Tell me what Mac can run good VR headsets.

My Surface Pro 7 (i7, 8GB, 256GB) made the leap to quad core and is great. Mine is updated to Windows 11.

M1 was the fastest laptop out there. But Intel's latest looks great (will be in Surface Pro 9) and benchmarks above the m1. But even now, the 11th gen Intel is no slouch. It doesn't meet M1 but it's fast and doesn't have the Windows compatibility problems. Basic Windows stuff can work on M1 but most more esoteric offerings (like Adobe Premiere plugins for example) don't work on M1.

Anyone use this for software development?
If you meant to be sarcastic, may be. If you are serious, with the 8gb ram, nah. Still an excellent portable product for most of office/home/school work.

This, or a MacBook Air M1 for the same price?
Unless you are already invested in mac (iPhone, iPad, Watch, etc. use their cloud etc), this is a much better product compared to MB Air.

Thanks to overly priced iPad Pro 12.9, I don't think we can expect a touch screen macbook's anytime near future. It would hurt CrApple's bottom line to move to touch screen macbooks.

If you are a windows person, you need one right now, go with it. If you can wait, wait for 12th gen. Hopefully, Surface Pro 9 base model comes with 16gb ram.

I'm in the market for one of these windows tablets, everyone I know who owns one speaks very highly of them. I'm getting tired of the limitations and bugs when using my ipad pro.

I'm cross shopping a windows surface device against the Lenovo ThinkPad X12 Detachable. For $1091 you can get a 12.3' 1920x1280 ips 400 nit touch screen, i5-1130G7, 16 GB, 512 GB SSD, and it comes with the keyboard and pen. $1179 for a i7-1160G7. The thinkpad seems more durable. (probably less with perkspot discounts)

Does anyone have any thoughts comparing these two devices?
Did you look at Acer Spin 5 or even the 3

Sure... it is better but what is PATHETIC is that the surface pro 3 had 8GB of RAM.
Still using a Surface pro 2 i5 8GB ram 256SSD from 2014. The surface line still hasn't given me a reason to upgrade. Also why is the screens getting bigger - my 10.8" is very portable, there is a port for an external if needed.

Tempted but holding out for newer models. I think having a 17in laptop as my main work rig and when I travel really light I would prefer Surface Go size but with 16gb ram and little better cpu than current offerings. Unit then my Surface GO 2 will have to do unless this goes to like 599 lol!

Why wouldnt you be able to use a surface for development work?

8GB is more than enough.

It's very easy to replace, it's only one Torx screw.
Replacing it physically is pretty easy, the hard part will be to clone it. If you don't have cloning hardware, then you will have to use a large usb drive that you can boot from and use acronis true image or aomei partition assistant to make a backup and then restore to your new ssd.

The easiest thing to do is just download the factory image from Microsoft. It was very easy to install.

Get a case with a kickstand if you plan to keep It for 2+ years as the kick stand will break over time and sadly it's not an easy fix! Otherwise not a bad buy!

I've had the surface pro 3 since 2014. Kickstand is fine. Had a surface pro 5 since launch. Kickstand is fine. Work at a company where the execs mostly use surface pro. Kickstands are almost never seen with problems.

If you're having kickstand issues, you're mistreating the machine.

This ^^^ No product with name "Pro" should have 8GB RAM and 128GB drive these days. From a business perspective this $900 is an unjustified expense. Non-business consumers: I have no idea why would they buy it on first place.
