It's not a valid question, rather, an incomplete question. 8GB is plenty for many use cases provided you are occasionally willing to close programs. In other cases, 16GB is not enough.

The conundrum is that much of the services are now asynchronous (runs in the background) and it takes 4GB just to keep Windows 11 running from startup.

The real question is whether a Windows laptop will operate well in 2-3 years on 8GB as more background services are coded into the OS.
Minimum 16GB ram needed in 2022, if you run virtual machines for work and study. This would be a killer deal even at $999 if it had 16GB ram.
Yeah, it's 5 better.

Quote from Ananke :
This ^^^ No product with name "Pro" should have 8GB RAM and 128GB drive these days. From a business perspective this $900 is an unjustified expense. Non-business consumers: I have no idea why would they buy it on first place.
I'll make sure to tell Apple. Maybe both Apple and Microsoft can agree not to use the word "pro" on their devices, because Ananke asked them to.

$900 is not an unjustified expense depending on what you're using this thing for. From a business perspective, no business would ever be spending $900 on these things. Businesses buy in bulk at set time periods for a reason; they get these things for less than we ever could.

But from a personal standpoint, it really depends on what you're using this thing for. I'm personally interested because I'd like something I could draw on that has the capability of a full Windows OS, and apparently the pen tech this time around is about as perfect you can get on a tablet that isn't dedicated to drawing. Outside of that, if you're someone who wants the capability of a full OS in tablet form, the surface is about your only choice. If you want the newest surface, this is the best price for it. If you don't, there are other slick deals that come and go that are listed here.

Right now I'm looking at a nice deal for a 7+. Depending on what Samsung's pricing looks like for their tablet, I might go with the 7+ instead to save a couple hundred bucks. But this is definitely a head-turner.

I got this and the 16gb version with i7. This one actually performed on par, so kept it instead of the more expensive one. I also found a cheap 1tb drive for ~$100 and plopped in there.

The biggest fault with this machine is that it is hard to use on your lap. Everything else is fantastic.

Exactly, this is very difficult to use on lap. These are perfect if you need touchscreen otherwise for general purpose or productivity don't get this., Just get the Dell 5310 which was on sale at Costco for $600 with 16Gb RAM and 512 Nvme.

Anyone use this for software development?
Used one for years. Once i went surface from the first year, its all I used. From surface rt, yeah that thing, surface pro(s), surface books, surface go(s)... With my surface pro, i had it runing 3 and at one time 4 screens. I from coding to ui stuff. Now, on the small 13" screen, it was not fun... That is why i got the surface book 2 at 15". its bigger, but works.

I broke my last surface pro, dont really know how either... I pulled it out of my bag and it was shattered. I just junked rather than having it fixed. On the other note, my surface go flew off of the toolbox on my truck on the highway going about 50-60,,, Flew off like a frisby. I saw it in my mirror.. I went back for it, it was not broken at all. corner of the magnesium was chipped and that was all. The surface line up is the real deal.

Very true... I do find it easy to use on my lap on the steering wheel when i am parked. I am always working so sometimes I will be in the parking lot with my surface go on my lap. It is perfect for that spot!
