The "R" versions of these TVs can't scale 480p content properly, and it looks blurry.

Conclusion, it seems that the 32 local dimming zones found in the 55" model is inadequate for blooming control; while, the 60 local dimming zones found in the 65" model is adequate for blooming control.

Therefore, for if you need a 55" sized TV, it may be better to step up to the U7G with 92 local dimming zones or step down to a TCL 4 series that does not have full array local dimming.
Most likely true. I ran several "blooming check" 4K vids on YouTube. I did not enjoy what I saw. :/

But if you read the reviews on Costco
it seems there may be QC issues as some people report of getting a "good panel" - but perhaps it's because they wrote the review after only tinkering with it for a few days. Eventually you'll stumble upon the blooming and get mad. I hear the Best Buy Android 55" version of the TV has a panel that is much better.

2 weeks ago I got the TCL 55S435 from Costco for 300 and now grabbed this Hisense u6gr5 for 400. In comparison so far, Hisense has better sound. That's about it i am afraid. Roku seems inferior to Android TV and the picture quality doesn't seem any better than TCL. Is there a specific video or movie clip I should see on both for comparison? I am only using this for streaming movies, tv shows etc.
I was feeling bad I missed the H9G for 500 but not sure now if jumping 200 over TCL will be noticeable improvement in experience.

I haven't seen that on mine, I have the 65" one.

Did you enable backlight local dimming to high, disable sharpness on all inputs and streaming?
I just unboxed this today and tested the blooming control. The setting backwards for Local Dimming. "Low" is actually the one that turns off the backlights the most which is the same as "High" on my X90J. Also a tick or two down on Brightness makes a big difference. It's pretty close to the Sony at half the cost. Not stoked that there isn't a motion enhancement option and the BFI kinda sucks. We'll see if it holds out. For 400, you won't find a better new TV.

My 65" tv does have limited blooming effect only at the play/pause button on screen other than that I didnt see any issue with blooming effect.

I have had this TV for 1 month and I am thinking of returning it to Costco. I was watching a movie with the kids - "Sing 2" - and the end credits has a full black screen with pink flamingos dancing around the credits. Holy moly the blooming effect was so bad I was almost embarrassed by what I was watching. It honestly looked like my high speed internet was cutting out or something it was so pixelated. The brights are great, love the Roku platform but the blacks are garbage. Really not looking forward to returning it as Costco.com's drop off was great and now I have to load it into the car. And I also don't have the box it came in anymore Frown
You don't need the box. They will still take it back.

I bought this on cyber Monday for the 65" version. Local dimming is great, and brightness is good for the price. 4K content looks fantastic. However anything lower than 4K looks terrible on this tv. Also have a U8G which blows this out of the water (as it should given the $ difference)

Bought for 450$ and it is still in return window. Will costco do a price adjustment if I am returning it for the price drop reason?

That's my experience (for the 55" model), too. Thinking about returning, but I do not have the box.

So, what is there with a better picture for the $450 price range (55")?

If anything lower than 4K looks terrible on this TV, then it will be a bad TV for watching cable. Is the your U8G better than the U6GR at upscaling content?

Between this and last year's H9G, which has less blooming?I
I bought this Roku one last month for my son from Costco ($450) and was so impressed I bought the H9G [Android] for myself last week on Amazon ($499). The H9G frame/stand looks a little classier, but honestly I can't tell much difference in the pictures—they're both the best looking TVs I've seen outside of OLEDs, for ~1/3 of the price. I applied the settings recommended by rtings for the H9G, but I couldn't notice as much difference from out of the box as previous LED TVs (TCL, Samsung). Dolby Vision seems legit.
FYI once you dismiss the annoying initial prompts to sign-in on Android, it's a little more seamless turning on with Apple TV, whereas the Roku takes a few seconds to switch powering on every time.
