the one thing about ultra short throw is that they are ideally projected on a perfectly flat surface. Any waves in your screen or wall or sheet or whatever your projecting on will be very magnified because of the extreme angle of incident. In my opinion, ultra short throws work best with fixed projection screens, a smooth flat wall, or possibly a drop screen that is tab tensioned and not inexpensive pulldown screens or a fabric sheet or wavy sheetrock/plaster even wall texture could be trouble.
I have a 77" OLED and a 120" UST.

No one cares about the OLED after they see the projector.

This or a 77 inch OLED for my basement? I am ok with spending upto $3000 and can get zero ambient lighting in the basement and have a whole empty wall that i can use to project stuff. Please help.

I want good blacks because literally every movie and TV show has a lot of dark scenes.
Are you me? I am currently going through this as well but with the Hisense L9G or PX1-Pro. I really am having trouble deciding between the OLED or UST. I know the OLED will have better picture quality but that size of 120"+ gets me excited!

True but which one has better picture quality? What 120" UST do you have?

Quote from Felon :
If you want good blacks then nothing will beat out an OLED currently. I have an LG CX and when a scene in a movie is pitch black you can't tell if the TV is on or off. It's awesome. None of that 'grayish not really black' black.

Obviously though an OLED won't compete with the sheer size of a 120" projected image. But it depends on which youd rather have.
Tough choice.

Quote from jumon :
I thought I wanted the same but now I can't go back after having a 120" screen since it feels just like a real theater to the entire family. I got an acoustically transparent screen instead of ALR (since I can control light as you can) and now the audio comes directly from the characters and action on the screen which is another huge plus for me. I still wish I had better blacks but not that much.
What projector do you have?
Quote from jkobylin :
💯 Exactly. I have a 110" on a epson 5040ub and people have the same reaction.
What is the reaction?

Quote from cyciumx :
The thing is, the blacks here aren't all washed out like most IPS displays... closer to VA. I own both a 65in OLED and a Short throw projector....I routinely prefer the projector and its no where near as good as the one in this post.
What projector do you have? Do you have a different room for projector or a screen in front of the TV?

Quote from omelette_du_fromage :
I have an Epsom 5050UB with a 120" screen in the living room and a LG CX 48" OLED as my primary monitor for work and PC gaming. Projector will never gets the perfect blacks like an OLED, but there is something awesome about the sheet size of the screen that fills your entire field of vision, even when you are sitting 12 ft away on a couch.
If you could only choose one, 83" OLED or a 120" UST projector, what would you choose?

Quote from NervousLumber386 :
To me, it depends on the size of the basement. I went with a 77" OLED in my upstairs living room and a 120" projector in my theater room in the basement. My wife and I wanted something different downstairs. You can't deny the picture quality of the OLED, but watching a movie on a 120" screen with a proper sound system just feels good.

Quote from minnus :
IMO, unless you have specific needs, a 77" OLED is going to be easier to setup with better picture quality. Gaming is also less than ideal with a projector generally.

A UST makes a lot of sense when you have very limited mounting options, but a lot of space (to take advantage of a bigger screen). I use a UST specifically because my living room has no logical walls (too many oddly placed windows) for a decently sized TV for the space.

The 120" screen is great, but if PQ is important in what I'm watching, I'll watch it on a 55" OLED.

Quote from gigarange :
Same but maybe with the Hisense PX1. I've decided if I'm staying 100" or under for the projector, I'll go with the OLED. Otherwise if I'm going 120" I'm going projector. I have a 55" and 65" OLED in the main living. Picture Q is great but it doesn't give you that same immersion feeling as a huge projection. Such a hard first-world-problem decision.
You and I have the exact same thought process. Currently going through the ringer on this. If you could only choose one, 83" OLED or a 120" UST projector, what would you choose? I know I won't do 100" and can fit 120". I keep going back and forth with that and the Hisense L9G or PX1-Pro

Does anyone know how this compares with the Epson 5050ub? Looking for a 4k projector around this price range for a 150 in screen.
5050ub will have better black levels. However, ust with 3000lumen you can watch day time with some light.

I tried a few UST laser projectors... Realized I'd need a multi thousand dollar special screen for kind of okay blacks that were super ultra kind of barely decent enough to potentially tolerate.

Returning it all and getting a 77" OLED was the best decision I made.

After having that for a year I watched a movie in a friend's home theater with a high end JVC... I'll take the OLED quality over projector quality any day.

When they make a 100" QD OLED or dual LCD or MicroLED though, I'll be happy to have more of both.

No. It's single laser only, and triple lasers are more than 3-4k.
Iam now thinking if I should have just bought the samsung LSP7T deal for 1999. (I left it cause it was single laser)
the new VAVA triple laser UST is pre-sale for 2999.

Very good price. Would have dived in but for the size. My current Panasonic AE8000u currently project upto 160 icnhes. STill amazing size. This one does 120 inches which is smaller. Otherwise 4k project you can blindly buy. But why is this sudden slash of price everywhere. New model coming out?

My projector is probably a bit dated at this point - my setup is the Vava 4k projector with a standing (motorized; goes up and down) ALR screen (which is basically mandatory with UST).

It is entirely based on the space you want to set up, and ultimately your own personal circumstance and how you plan to use it.

Personally, 83" hands down. If you have kids...or pets (especially cats...), you might find yourself readjusting the projector a lot. Standard projectors are usually ceiling mounted will likely be undisturbed - not so much for UST. Another big caveat with UST is that the range of placement is very limited. Unlike standard projectors where the lens can shift and focus so you have a little bit of leeway, there is basically just one perfect spot with UST, lol.

Also, projectors in general are not silent. They have a fan that increases in speed and volume the longer you use it. You'll definitely hear it during silent scenes; a problem that is generally non-existent for OLED.

Outside of the inconveniences and caveats, I think it really boils down to what kind of experience you're looking for. As everyone else is saying, there is definitely something a bit magical with a 120" screen...but if the alternative is a 83" screen, that should be pretty impressive as well even before all the picture quality perks of OLED.

Projectors are such a fad. The TVs and the sizes have caught up with 86" going for around $1500 with 120HZ and good quality. The TVs also come with a good warranty and last longer with less hassle. It's so easy to get them to work with HDMI 2.1 and all other latest stuff. They also work in varied light environments. They also do a good job at upscaling non-4k content videos.

Overall, I tried a 4k UST projector and felt it's not worth the money compared to say 86" TV worth around $1500.

Thanks, random 10-point person, for your completely ridiculous and out of touch perspective of this situation.
Projectors are not going anywhere. Theater and home theater is not going anywhere. Your comment has wasted precious life of anyone that may have had the misfortune to have read it. I award you no points and may God have mercy on your soul.

Personally I didn't get the movie theater feel from from a 120 inch screen. I ended up getting the Vava and paired it with a 135 inch screen (Vava can go up to 150) and I love it.

As has been posted many times, don't get a UST without an ALR screen.

No they aren't cheap, but they are amazing.

A 120" 4K movie with a good sound system beats any movie theater experience.

I do have Fury and the sound is considerably better with it. However, I have apple TV and Xbox. Having to plug HDMI every time I play game is PITA. Also, with Arcana, apple TV remote doesn't switch projector ON or OFF. Or at least I haven't been able to set it up.

You could always connect your Apple TV to HDMI in on the XBox.

Just posting my quick 2 cents based on the predecessor (P1) to this one, that I own. I agree that the blacks definitely won't be as good as an OLED, but watching this in a light-controlled room, maybe within 30 seconds (and probably as the projector is warming up anyway), I don't notice this at all. I pair it with a 120" ALR screen and it looks amazing. The only frustrating part (in case this helps anyone) was trying to get it set up initially. Once I accepted that the SmartFit app wasn't working for my particular setup, I just went into the settings of the box itself, it was fine - a bit more adjustment than if the app had worked, but not a big deal. Hopefully all that software-related stuff is resolved with this second version. My son and I love watching movies on this big screen, and he would live down in our basement playing XBox on it if he were allowed to (he's not that competitive - so can't comment on lag time).

size is always king imo. We used to live behind a minimall, which connected to our backyard, and would use a 540p cheap ass projector to cast like a 30 foot+ picture on it's white brick wall. Terrible by any A/V purist standard. You could even see a power line droop down on the top. And everyone that watched with us were blown away lol
