I happen to own 1 already.

Why buy an EX5? Its cheaper than EX5s with a built in tablet.

I was able to add my own tablet which connects to a usb plug port on the bike.

I wanted to buy this bike to join the Peloton membership. FYI, Peloton membership is $40 a month for all access with their bikes. You have the option to just join Peloton digital membership which is their app only for $13 a month. Since I'm prior service (Military) its only $10 a month.

If you buy the EX5s you are stuck with their app and you have no choice but to get on the echelon membership if you want to join classes. Mind you, you can still use this bike without membership and it must be plugged in.

I connected my own tablet and installed a 3rd party app called qdomyos-zswift. It's a custom app for Android and Iphone to convert your echelon stats to peloton and the best thing about it is it will sync (auto resistance) the echelon bike to the peloton classes.

So i run my zswift on my tablet and run peloton app on my smart tv and the peloton app will sync to the zswift app once you login with your peloton membership.

I hope that helps anyone wanting to get on Peloton using an ex5.

The Echelon bikes with integrated tablets do NOT require a membership, do NOT lock you into their app, and do NOT require that you even use the tablet. The integrated tablets up until a recent update were hackable to allow some 3rd party apps. Either way your set-up is the preferred method for folks using Peloton, Zswift, etc. but there are lots of different ways to configure things with or without the integrated tablet. For instance, you can ride inside the Echelon app with "freestyle ride" on the integrated tablet and follow a Peloton ride on your smart TV (although you won't have auto-resistance like using Qdomyos-zswft). On a bike with integrated tablet you can leave the tablet OFF and do exactly what you do, by use your smart phone/other tablet with qdomyos-zswift for bike metrics/control and smart TV for Peloton.

Again, just trying to clarify that the bikes with or without integrated tablet can be used exactly the same with 3rd party apps and devices. HTH.

Oh and the EX-4S+ for $800 from Costco is a great deal as well although it comes with a tablet. The Ex-4S+ also comes with a full 1 year membership as well so, you can at least tryout the Echelon app to see if you like it.

I researched them both a while back and wrote about my assessment here:
https://slickdeals.net/f/15492175-schwinn-fitness-ic4-indoor-cycling-exercise-bike-1-year-jrny-membership-700-free-shipping?p=152053657#post152053657

I now have been riding the IC4 for about 5 weeks and just assembled an EX3 last night. I also pulled the trigger on the EX5 with a delivery date in 2 weeks to secure the price and give me a moment to compare them. I like the IC4 a lot but am curious about the auto resistance.

Essentially, my assessment for the IC4 is largely what I predicted. It's a great bike. I think in that price range it's either the EX5 or the IC4. The IC4 at $599 was an amazing deal. Based on assembling the EX3 yesterday, the IC4 seems a tad sturdier, The EX3 can raise the handle bar 1 inch higher on max setting, but cannot move them forward or backward. I am keen on testing the auto-resistance, and then it will be either IC4 or EX5. The IC4 appears tad more compact, but the bottle holders are in my way when I get out of the saddle. The IC4 only has manual resistance, but it is 4 short turns to go from 0-100. The seat on the EX3 seems much inferior to the IC4.

The EX5 compared to the EX3 seems to have a munch better handlebar, that can also be moved forward and backward, and the screen holder is nicer and sturdier. The water bottle holders are also better. Not sure anything else is different but at $700 on sale right now the EX5 seems worth it.

Both can be used with the peloton $13 app and you can put the QZ - qdomyos-zwift app (same FB group) in between. You don't need that though for the IC4, but you would need it for the auto-resistance on the Echelon. I have been riding the IC4 just with the Peloton app and Wahoo HR strap and have the cadence from the bile and the HR from the strap in the Peloton display on the app.

I think the IC4 may be a tad better in many other categories than the EX3/EX5 but the auto resistance may be the killer feature that makes me swap them in favor of the Echelon. We'll see in 7-10 days after a few rides on the EX3.

Yes, please let us know the app

I covered the app on my post. Its called qdomyos-zswift. Works great for automatic resistance with Peloton classes. I rarely have to manually turn the knob unless i want more or less resistance than what the recommended level during the classes

How does it compare to the Schwinn IC4 posted 2-3 days ago?
The Schwinn is a fine, well-made bike that many use with success. That said, the EX-5 is far superior based solely on the fact that it has capability of auto-resistance. This means that the bike can be made to automatically change resistance based on the Peloton class you're taking or based on a change in the road gradient in Zwift. Amazingly immersive. You also have the option to manually adjust the resistance with the knob if you choose.

There is a Facebook group of Peloton Digital App users + Echelon Bike users. Join it if you buy this bike. Ton of info and very useful people.

I paid $349 for an Echelon Connect Sport at Walmart a couple months ago. This bike looks very similar to mine. Is it really worth twice as much?
Short answer is no. Longer answer is it depends on how you use your bike and how much you value having things like auto resistance and a smoother flywheel.

Qdomyos-zwift is the name of the app and it's amazing. $6 Android or $4 iOS. Beyond worth it. The app turns the EX-5 into a Peloton Bike+ with added benefits (to name a few: 1) ability to easily connect to other services like Zwift, RGT, Rouvy, FulGaz, etc. 2) better UI when doing Power Zone training and 3) at least $1800 less).
https://www.qzfitness.com There is also a FB group that helps and the developer is super active.

90% of people will not touch it after a month or two, like most of the treadmills.

Thanks, I did a first 20-min low impact ride earlier on the EX3 trying the auto-resistance doing a Peloton ride. I am a bit sore from a 45-min HIIT and Hills from Thu on the IC4 as I am still trying to get back in shape. It was nice to let the bike do the resistance itself. I only touched the dial 2-3 times to see if I can manually adjust. I set the QZ app to follow the upper resistance level (you can adjust lower/average/upper). There is a noticeable delay from the instructor signaling the change to it actually happen, 5-6 seconds. Sometimes it felt like 8 seconds. If you do a ride with constant switching this will be annoying. But then again, you can also turn it off and/or adjust manually, but you HAVE the option on the Echelon. It was otherwise very pleasant and convenient and worked fine once I got it going.

That said, the EX3 at times was already at 23/25 level of resistance and 32 is max for the Echelon bikes (resistance scale 0-32). That would be ~75% on the IC4 (resistance scale 0-100), I don't think I was above 60/65 on that one yet. To be fair though I need to do the same ride on both bikes next week to compare, but at first glance wondering if the max resistance is enough or if it is just an issue of resistance not being linear (as with most of these bikes). The IC4 is much more difficult at lower resistance levels for example.

The metal wire weight holder for the bike actually broke for some reason, bought a replacement weight holder form Etsy and actually like it better than the original one that comes with the bike.
