Specific to console gaming, compatible only with Playstation 5.
PCIe 4.0 NVMe speed (up to 7,000/5,100 MB/s for read/write speed)
Encryption: AES 256-bit Full Disk Encryption, TCG/Opal V2.0, Encrypted Drive (IEEE1667)
Compatibility: 980 PRO is backward compatible with PCIe 3.0. Sequential performances (up to): 3500MB/s for reads, 3450MB/s (1TB) for writes. Random (up to): 690K IOPS (500GB/1TB) for reads, 660K IOPS (1TB) for writes.
Lot's of speculation about future drives and "not much difference", but it doesn't change the fact that this price is one of the lowest seen yet in a long time for the performance, and it's a slick deal.
No other store is even close price wise.
It even includes a heatsink people pay extra for with lower priced drives for their PS5..
If anyone is on the fence, here's my total breakdown. I added the Pro Membership to my account along with the 2TB 980 Pro. My total was $243.35. I'm going to check if the firmware is up to date via Samsung Magician software, and I'll be good to go.
Thanks for the heads-up on this drive development, it wasn't even on my radar. Googled and found this
"Broad ecosystem support is likely to be an issue for some time, however, with CPU support for PCIe 5.0 from Intel, for example, currently restricted to PCIE slots and not M.2."

Just curios, any way to tell if an m.2 SSD will fit in my laptop without opening it? This heatsink is huge based on the picture. I have Lenovo Legion 5 Gen 6 (17.3", AMD processor, 3060) in case anyone has the same laptop and already tried it.
I added a 970 as my secondary drive a month ago but it was a PITA to get this case open.

Anyone else still waiting for Ontrac to pick up the package from Gamestop?
Good luck... OnTrac will basically mark you package as delivered and just keep the package. I had two Black Friday packages stolen by them and they don't care. Driver marked delivered, Ring cam show no evidence, called OnTrac and they confirmed GPS showed driver lied and that they'd open investigation and would get back to me after the 'investigation period'. No response after their requested wait time so I followed up twice more and same thing- no responses after their requested 'investigation periods', and finally on the 3rd call they basically told me they don't do anything about their thief drivers and told me to contact GS. I called GS, told them about the missing order and they didn't bother putting up any type of fuss and just said 'sorry, we'll refund you'. GS could replace the items since both were sold out and I was pissed because they were good prices. Honestly if your package is "lost" then I doubt you'll get a replacement since this was clearly a price mistake but at least you'll get your money back.
why are people stating manufacturing date? was there a running change to this drive?
There is a firmware update (12/21) that fixes the issue where the NVMe isn't reading at full speed on the PS5. It's an easy update if you have extra m.2 slot on your PC motherboard or laptop motherboard.
Ones manufactured during and after 12/21 will have the firmware that fixes this issue.
So for those without a m.2 slot on their computer, they have no means to update the drive.
My drive needed an update. Anyways installed in my PC and currently moving a lot of Gigs from my HDD to my 2 TB 980, it's not a fast process. Unsure if I'm going to keep second or throw in laptop ATM.
1TB I just received: Manufacturing Date 30 October 2021.
It arrived in a regular envelop with air bubbles. The delivery dude just tossed it in front of my entry door. Not happy about that...
Now I need to find a way to update the firmware while not having a spare M.2 Slot. Might have to boot from USB and temporarily put this 1TB in my solo M.2 slot.
I asked a PC repair company if they could help. They asked for $125.... That's more than the $123 with taxes I paid for the drive.............. Gonna do it myself.
I did exactly this. Removed my NVME drive from the M.2 slot, swapped in 980 Pro, booted up Windows via USB, installed Samsung Magician, updated firmware, then swapped back in my NVME drive. Not the easiest route but the only one I had since I only had one M.2 slot that was already being occupied. Posting here in case someone could use this information.

Y'all gotta stop tripping when packages get delivered. Its literally called a "solid state" drive... nothing detrimental is happening because it got tossed a few feet. On top of that, its all security theater anyways because these packages get roughed around beyond anything that is seen on the last mile delivery. You saw this get tossed 4 feet? Try knowing somebody launched it 20 feet from the from unload, to sort to preload.

Lol solid state has nothing to do with anything it's still a PCB with chips on it. Still better than a spinning disk but still not "solid" in terms of can take an absolute beating if the board snaps for example
But good point the thing has probably been drop kicked 20 x from origin to destination but it's still understandably off putting if it's lobbed at your front door since that's your last impression of its status

Solid state without springy parts like AC coils or capacitors is definitely far from being affected by drops - more-so because of physics. Namely the fact the m.2 SSD is tiny and weighs almost nothing. The g-forces necessary to break it with the minimal padding in its packaging would only be generated from something physically crushing it...
Also, since you acknowledge its been "drop kicked 20 x" from it's origin then you are proving my point and deflating your initial paragraph.

Intentional deflation. I conceded but ... yet I see both sides and don't take a stance
The only thing is - If you spend a lot of money you'd prefer to not see your gear drop kicked right in front of you. Even if , in most likelihood ; it was and multiple times. The difference is you can apply uncertain optimism when it's behind closed doors. There's a possibility it wasn't ; however small. When it is in front of you, there is no possibility it wasn't lol
Even if it doesn't make any difference it's unsettling
Anyones still pending with the shipper? I got one of the two I ordered, but the second one (ordered with another item too) is still pending at ontrac.
Same,
Shipping label created; data received. BUCKEYE, AZ
is all OnTrac is showing. Stuck in Buckeye, AZ (outside Phoenix) for 4 days now, pretty ridiculous.
Dunno if that means OnTrac hasn't picked it up or if they have and just aren't updating the status or if Gamestop lost the entire thing. I'll just wait till monday and call for a refund if its still stuck.

Yeah - I mean I'd prefer not to get a refund since I know they won't honor the price again. I'm also afraid to call today, thinking they'll just cancel without giving me another option.

However it sounds like your "slamming the market over the next 12 months" is optimistic?
