The Sony 85" X85J is this same price ($1799.99)... and seems to offer more... as it is more comparable to the Samsung Q70A Series.

I had a Dolby Vision TV (Vizio P65-E1) and the picture was gorgeous, then it failed and was replaced with a Samsung (TU8000) by SquareTrade. After that, I felt like I was missing out and had I known more about HDR formats, I would have fought for a like for like replacement. One could say they've lived without a TV their whole life and they don't feel like they're missing out on owning one. Samsung is the only one who does this, even lower end TV's like Hisense have DV, so the question is why is Samsung being so stingy with paying licensing fee for DV when their TV's sell for more? Consumer getting shafted both on price and on features. Their TV's aren't great either, I've had more luck with TV's of other brands, my Samsung DLP and Plasma's both went out around the 5 year mark.

ymmv. I have the same tv's like 7-8 years old hanging on the walls, never missed a beat. I am a believer people who move often or move tv's around break them more, (not saying you do) but my friends break tv's a ton, they give out prematurely but he moves every year.

me, I wall mount them out of box and they sit there, never had a tv die (all Samsungs). so for me, havnt done me wrong. and yeah I dont have DV never had a tv with DV so to me, all I know is what I am used too.

edit, one time I had a massive surge and my tv wouldn't do anything, samsung did some magic, popped command prompt on tv from china, reset a bunch of stuff internally saw the mouse moving around etc on screen... made me realize.. we can be hacked pretty easily. but idc. whatever. they did a hard reset from coding from china using pc, and boom. fixed it.

crazy watching them completely take over the tv from china though for real

Wow that does sound crazy! Yeah I wall mount all mine too, been in the house for about 16 years. LG seems to be running the longest for me, have an old 1080p 43in that's wall mounted been running for about 10 years now.

last year I sold a bunch of the tv's off, (got pretty good value) and even tossed one in my garage. lol just because it was flawless (1080p un60f8000) and put 2 of them in my room mates rooms on walls just because.

then I upgraded to Q80's and Q90's in living rooms, (just got that cheap 82 inch 1299 q6) from costco w 7 year warranty and 4% back for the downstairs dayroom, honestly I am very pleased with it, it being 60hz, I see zero stuttering, all apps work flawless, ps5 and switch, no skipping or anything.

exceeded my expectations for 1299. I thought surely I would get a qn85 85 for downstairs when they went on sale. but pleasantly was surprised with this unit (gf wanted a larger tv for basement for animal crossing and Fortnite...... yea...) whatever Lol

heres pic of the tv I even tossed in garage. great for instructional YouTube videos when I build or break crap on vehicles-- but purely due to fact I havnt had a tv break yet, its hard to want to try new brands. (im a slick dealer after all, and I always get tv's on sales) so its not like im paying the samsung premium brand new msrp price

I sold the samsung D8000 I think it was for a dang good price, its crazy if you buy a tv on large sale, then use it years, and get a good fraction of what you paid just because you got it on the largest sale possible.

We really have to quit meeting like this lol. I was actually on Samsung.com looking at a 75" QN85 TV to replace my 3 year old 65". They have the 75" QN85 on sale with educators/student discount for $1799 and I might bite tomorrow. Costco had the 75" Q80 for $1745 and a bonus $900 Costco Cash card but was not available to ship to my area here in GA. Intesteringly they did have it available to ship to my Colorado zipcode though..but that doesn't do me any good plus it went out of stock this evening. If I bite tomorrow, the 65" will go in the garage lol. The bedrooms already have their own. Smilie

Samsung doesn't support Dolby Vision. Samsung uses their own HDR10+

Telling people a Samsung TV doesn't have Dolby Vision is like telling Tesla owners they can't use gas.

Can some explain why the Sony regular led (lower price tier) gets compared to the Samsung QLEDs vs their regular LEDs like the 8000 series?

Do the Sony regular LEDs really boast that much of a higher picture quality?

Sony's entry level line is the X80J whereas Samsung's entry level line(s) is/are the 7000/8000 series. The Sony X85J is a lower mid-tier model w/ a Triluminos Display (Sony's QLED)... much like Samsung's Q60/Q70 series... hence, the comparison in this thread. The Samsung Q60 series isn't really that different from their 8000 series; basically, the Q60 series adds QLED and brightness over the 8000 series, but overall, they get rated very similarly.
