The new iPad 9th Gen only supports Apple Pencil 1st gen, not the 2nd gen. Many of the older devices do not support the 2nd gen pencil.

Hi using a 7th generation iPad with latest iPadOS. I purchased this 1st gen Apple Pencil and it works really well. Got it at Best Buy during one day sale for $59. This was all before march 2020.

Get procreate for $10 … incredible painting app with no subscription. has a huge following. Procreate aims to challenge Adobe. Using procreate and a 1st gen Apple Pencil will surprise you.

Compared to Wacom pads and art apps in windows, an older iPad, 1st gen Apple Pencil, and an affordable but world class app opens many doors to aspiring artists.

Also, I use the same setup for work and class to take notes. The pencil works incredibly well with recognition software along with very powerful iPad apps that cost less than $10. These apps help organize notes. Also great with mind-map apps.

Give it a chance if you have a supported ipad.

Edit: link to pencils and which ones they support:

If I have this right, in fall 2019, we went with the 1st gen pencil because we were just cheap. Looking now at the iPads added since 2019, 1st gen pencil covers a lot of devices.

Apple Pencil is a product name designed for iPad users to draw or write on it, if you are expecting a pencil to write on paper, well, it won't do that.

And some people will jump & buy it, because it says "Apple".
I wonder how many people buy this stuff, thinking one day it will be a collector's item?

The low end iPad has never supported the 2nd Gen pencil. Apple didn't "go back" but it does recycle parts for entry level models from past high end models. That's the only reason the entry iPad supports the Pencil at all.

the pencil 2.0 is only compatible with the iPad Pro and the new iPad Air. this 1st gen pencil is compatible with the base model iPads.

unless you do art & sketching on your ipad or take a lot of notes, neither pencil is "worth it". the pencil is really nice because you have touch sensitivity, tilt control and "palm rejection" (so if you rest your hand on the iPad screen, you can still use the pencil unlike, say, a normal stylus)

i use a 1st gen pencil with my base ipad to take notes on. an ipad + pencil + the goodnotes app is amazing. but that's mainly because i find myself in a lot of business meetings and i prefer taking pen/paper notes (vs typing them) because i also often need to chart/diagram on the fly.

if you aren't an artist or you don't spend a lot of time taking notes in business meetings and you spend most of your ipad time watching youtube while pooping, then no, of course you don't need a fancy $75 bluetooth stylus with tilt control and palm rejection laugh out loud

I would read up on the battery issues for these gen 1 before buying. Mine died after ~3 months because the battery drained and I didn't charge right away!

I think the same thing happens to gen 2 also according to reviews on Amazon.
