This definitely seems like a worse deal than the 80K mile offers (or maybe it was even higher?). It says you get the pass after spending 5K in 3 months which is relatively heavy spending....but lets say you apply and get the card in 1 week 2/18/22, then complete the spending requirements in 2 months (2.5k a month) instead of 3) earliest you would get the companion pass would be 4/18/22 and it will expire on 2/28/23 so only 10 months of use) (most likely tied to statement date or something of the like - so likely even less). The 50K difference in flights is enough to cover at least 2 RT flights and likely more. Whereas with the 80K sign up bonus if you work the way to the companion pass you end up with the remainder of the year you qualify and the following year for free companion flights and you have more miles to book with......this one is a pass
Someone can travel with you whenever you do, for free. You still pay tax on fare. The pass lasts 1y.

It's a nice deal, you have to factor in how many times you would use it in a year to calculate the saving. Often southwest tickets are cheap in first place. Meanwhile there are other non related credit cards out there with 80,000-100,000 points which I think is a better deal.

If you are a hardcore flyer on southwest, it would be a slickdeal.
Only 4 people total. Once you set your companion, you can only change it 3 times.

Quick tips about companion pass, you can change your companion thru out the year, as long as the person does not have an active reservation.

I have it last year, I flown SW about 20 times but my gf was only able to use it twice. It turned out to be not a good deal for us.
how come was it a bad deal for you - your gf was only able to use it twice, but for remaining 18 times you had another companion...

If you get 125K SW points within one calendar year then you get the CP for that year AND the following year. There's multiple combinations of cards you can get to get you over the 125K. Most common is the business card for 80K and a personal one for 30K. Then add in your spending to get to the 125K. Once you get the CP then you go into your SW account and add your spouse as you companion. They can then fly for free (still have to pay some taxes) on every flight you take.
Can you send link to the business card with 80K points?

Thanks for the really helpful tip. Can we get both the cards in a span of 6 months ? Like the rewards plus now as it has a deadline of March and the business card 3 to 4 months later. Combine the points together to get the companion pass extended till end of 2023 ? 10 k spending in 3 months is difficult
agree, 10k spending on credit card is difficult to pull unless your mortgage company accepts credit card payment

Going to get my wife a new card very soon. Debating this over the Venture X. We have a purchase that will cost $2500 and a week hotel stay that will be about $1500 plus I'm guessing ~$500 of leisure spending. It's also possible she may buy a luxury handbag during our trip which could be another $1500-3000 spending.

Too bad they didn't offer this before we booked our flights (with southwest) to Hawaii.

I did the 100,000 end of 2021. Got 100,000 after spending $12,000. I'm up to 115,000 on the Companion. The last 15,000 spend is going to be tough. In my case this may have been better even though 70,000 less miles
Pay your taxes with your credit card. They charge 1.9% service fee. Southwest points are like 1.4% cashback. Effectively it is only a 0.5% fee and you dont have to manufacture spending.

Taxes are 3x as much as the base ticket.

"Taxes" (not actually most airfare taxes, really just the TSA fee) are $5.60 each way on domestic flights for the companion.

I have the lowest SW card. Been getting this offer in my mail/email for a few weeks now. Do I need to cancel my card and wait a while and put in for another and my points transfer to new card?

Yes, you need to close your current card. You need to wait at least a week, up to 30 days to apply for the new card (applying for the same card = wait 30 days. Apply for a different SW card = you can probably get away with applying sooner). Your points are in your Southwest account, no need to do anything with them.

I have a question. With the companion pass do you have travel 2/28/2023 in order to use it or book by 2/28/2023?

I'm debating if my wife should get one, but will definitely pull the trigger if it's "book by" expiration since we usually go to Hawaii every spring break.

Edit: Seems like based on this article is "travel by" date. Bummer.

How quickly does the companion pass get enabled from the time you spend the 5K? Is it days? Weeks or after the statement date?
TIA
