Be careful buying big box store softener. There'sa reason they're cheap.

You need to look at valve quality, flow rate, grain capacity, and cubic feet of resin (at least 1.5-2).

Fleck is known quality among a few other brands.
Why do you think they only last 4-6 years? I've never heard of such a short lifespan for a water softener.
I bought a Fleck system for around $700 and had a plumber install it for about $800 if I remember correctly in 2015. Depending on your setup and location of where you want to install the appliance, they need an in and out pipe routed. Mine is in the garage. I would call a few plumbers to get quotes but still way cheaper than getting it done by water softener places. I would also suggest getting a RO system for the kitchen for drinking water as it's not recommended to drink softened water.

I can confirm this. The cover is a piece of shiet. You also have to make sure the wire coming out of the backside that you dont fray the power adapter cable wire when the top plastic cover moves around if you don't have it secured.

I am a novice and looking to get a softner for home to reduce calcium scaling in bathrooms. The local guys quoted me upwards of $5k for a 4 bedroom house.

How does this compare to that? Can I buy this and get a plumber to install it ?

TIA

Besides the size of the house, it also depends on how many in the family.

For the install, it depends on which plumber you talk to, as well as your water supply set up. Some plumber world not do it as they want to make $$ on the unit itself, which I understand, just business.

I got mine installed in the garage for $120-150, he had to do some pipes cutting and welding. One of the best $150 I ever spend.

No need to spend $5k, imho.

The average life on these are ~4-6 yrs, based on a 4 people family. Juts sharing

I have this also, installed it about 2 years ago. Works well, no issues really. Cover doesn't bother me. The wifi tells you when it's low on salt and alerts you of power loss (when it comes back on). I use the diamond salt from lowes, which has been challenging to find a few months back. Stocked up a bit when it came back in stock. With the salt, supposedly you can't mix or swap salt type (solar crystals to other one), not sure why. Had a problem initially with the valve, called them up and they sent the parts to fix it. Overall pretty happy with it. If you're handy, you can DIY it.
Good point made by Mxyx, softeners add a small amount of sodium into the water, can't really taste it, but if you're on a low sodium diet, you don't want this salt in your water. Reverse osmosis fixes this. Water from my 5 stage system is excellent. Like bottled water. You do waste a lot of water with RO, but we only use it for drinking and cooking.

Appreciate the comment on the wire though. Nothing a little heat shrink on the power cable won't fix to add a little extra armor/insulation in the area near the cover.

Regarding cover, I've only just filled mine for the first time. No issues for me. Used a knife to cut the corner off of the bag of salt and it poured in perfectly.

I just bought a house, how do I know if mine is working or not? Just fill the tank up with the softener salt?
