You need to look at valve quality, flow rate, grain capacity, and cubic feet of resin (at least 1.5-2).
Fleck is known quality among a few other brands.

I can confirm this. The cover is a piece of shiet. You also have to make sure the wire coming out of the backside that you dont fray the power adapter cable wire when the top plastic cover moves around if you don't have it secured.
How does this compare to that? Can I buy this and get a plumber to install it ?
TIA

For the install, it depends on which plumber you talk to, as well as your water supply set up. Some plumber world not do it as they want to make $$ on the unit itself, which I understand, just business.
I got mine installed in the garage for $120-150, he had to do some pipes cutting and welding. One of the best $150 I ever spend.
No need to spend $5k, imho.
The average life on these are ~4-6 yrs, based on a 4 people family. Juts sharing

Good point made by Mxyx, softeners add a small amount of sodium into the water, can't really taste it, but if you're on a low sodium diet, you don't want this salt in your water. Reverse osmosis fixes this. Water from my 5 stage system is excellent. Like bottled water. You do waste a lot of water with RO, but we only use it for drinking and cooking.

Regarding cover, I've only just filled mine for the first time. No issues for me. Used a knife to cut the corner off of the bag of salt and it poured in perfectly.
