I work for Avis, code is valid for BAYPHARM CORP. employees only.
However, anyone can use them and most counter staffs don't care. Unless it's a manager checking you in, then they might ask for validation. The reason is because even without accidents, we periodically bill BAYPHARM CORP. for wear and tear and other miscellaneous charges, if they refuse to pay due to "fraud", you better believe we're gonna get those funds from you.

Well, I tried it, and I cannot even lookup the reservation online with confirmation code. Agent said they cannot make change and cannot cancel as it is reserved through that company. Chat agent cannot even pull the order, but phone agent can see it but they don't have permission to touch it.

These discount codes are valid for anyone renting at participating Avis airport locations only. Please read the OP carefully. Avis airport locations are predominantly contactless - therefore no need to worry - unless you are trying to game the system where the codes aren't valid. Be smart.
Are you willfully ignoring the insurance liability here? If you use a company code that doesnt belong to you, your cc insurance and personal insurance can deny you coverage. Its on of those things that is all over flyertalk and why people dont want to risk using random company codes. Also whats to say a rental car company cant blacklist you for using company codes that dont belong to you? That aside though, I would be more worried that if I got into a wreck somewhere that I could possibly be on the hook personally with 0 insurance coverage.

As with any rental vehicle transaction, you can either decline insurance coverage and provide your own or pay for coverage via Avis. Your choice.

Maybe it is location/region specific, but I had great experiences with Hertz in Southern CA, LA airport. I know there is some story about people being sued over "car theft", I don't know about that. It sounds too crazy. It might be one of those things where it is overblown or we are not getting the full picture.

I read details. Say, the credit card/payment had issues, Hertz just called the police (Instead of just calling the renter to work it out). They just took the easy way. It is reported in mainstream (reputed) news outlets. Lawsuit is filed. Judge ordered Hertz to provide number of (so called) thefts they reported. Hertz is fighting back to skip giving this number (claiming it is their company secret).
Also, another place said, Hertz reported theft to police. The renter came back at the end, paid and left. The "stolen" vehicle was found at Hertz's own parking lot.
I will only rented from the Hertz when all other places are not available and are expensive. That hasn't happened so far.

Yeah what happened? Is it simply inflation or has the cost of maintaining rental cars increased?

Basically the rental companies bought high and sold low. When demand was low, they liquidated over a third of their inventory due to the pandemic and rideshare competition. After pandemic restrictions lifted and demand rose, they had to try to buy back their previous inventory. The semiconductor shortage is also limiting the supply of new cars in addition to the increased demand.

When you rent a car from Avis you either decline their insurance or you provide your own. Most major credit cards provide secondary coverage to your main carrier.

Double check your credit cards before assuming this. A lot of CC companies started dropping this feature in the last couple of years especially on lower tier cards.

An example being the WF Active cash, no insurance, purchase protection or extended warranties of any kind.

If you take advantage of this, avoid Avis in Burlington, VT. I prepaid the full price of around $400 and after dropping the car off at the designated day, they claimed I was over 20 days late and charged me an extra $4400! That took several months to get settled.

Horrible company. In comparison, I recently rented from Fox in Austin and they were awesome.

Quote from GARRR :
I go directly with the rental company just because my American express premium rental coverage only works when booking directly... I end up paying less doing this since I only pay 17$ for full coverage for the duration of my rental period, instead of 17$ a day
Thanks for that, repped. I didn't know Amex offered it. When renting domestically, I generally decline coverage and rely on my credit card and personal car insurance. I see that the program you brought up works worldwide (with a few exceptions). When renting internationally, twenty bucks per rental isn't so bad.

Some people here on SD have credit card coverage through Amex Platinum. That is worldwide too, but secondary insurance:
Quote :
Does this mean it is secondary coverage?
Yes, it is secondary to any other coverage which may be available to You, Eligible
Renter, or the Eligible Car Rental Claimant. This applies to all benefits provided herein
EXCEPT for the Accidental Death or Dismemberment Coverage. https://www.americanexpress.com/content/dam/amex/us/credit-cards/features-benefits/policies/NAC-Benefit-Guides/Benefit-Guide-1-1-20 CRLDI_Benefit_Guide_371-397_EDT01.20REV_10.20.pdf [americanexpress.com]

The program GARRR brought up is primary insurance
Quote :
Coverage is primary for theft and damage to a Rental Vehicle. If your rental vehicle is damaged, you can file that claim with us first as your primary provider.
https://feeservices.americanexpre...ge/home.do

Chase Sapphire is primary
Quote :
Coverage is primary and provides reimbursement up to the actual cash value of the vehicle for theft and collision damage for most rental cars in the U.S. and abroad.https://cardbenefits.chase.com/ch...age-waiver

As always, read the fine print of coverage to see what it covers.

Nothing in life is guaranteed 100%, but the mathematical probability is greatly in your favor if you compare the two companies. I doubt there are many 2022 or even 2021 vehicles with Fox.

This is just an opinion from one SD'er - so enter at your own risk.
That claim is just plain wrong and a prime example of someone not knowing what they are talking about. I've rented thousands of cars and your chance of getting a newer car is completely random regardless of which company used.

Just so you guys are aware of the "fine print"

https://www.americanexpress.com/c...c591920INT

D. Criminal Activity/Fraud
An Eligible Beneficiary's right to seek or obtain Car Rental Loss and Damage Insurance benefits may be cancelled due to alleged criminal activity, deceit, fraud, material misrepresentation, excessive or abusive Claims.

Most insurance policies on CCs and otherwise have a fraud claims built in so use those corporate codes at your own risk.
