Depends what you want to power in emergencies. 256Wh doesn't go a long way past charging cell phones and tablets
I know I could buy a UPS for between $50-80, but I read that the sealed lead acid batteries in the average UPS last 3 yrs.
Would a lithium iron oxide battery's life and safety be affected if its continuously plugged in and hooked up to the cable modem?

Maybe for this purpose. I bought it when it was 160 as a UPS for my CPAP. I woke up the next morning to hear the fan going and the battery was 60%, I guess my CPAP pulls more current than it can charge. I would think the modem would be fine no problem but I'm not really sure how much a home router pulls. I keep mine for a backup and am considering getting this as a backup for my backup. I like knowing if there is a power outage I can hook it up to an extra solar panel to charge and having a second one will be even better.

Curious - I am a bit confused if it did or did not work for your cpap. I have one and it would be nice to use it camping with a small fan maybe? Thanks
Sorry, it did work with my CPAP but not really as a UPS like I had hoped because it drained the battery even though it was plugged in to the house electricity.
I suspect mine wouldn't last all night using the inverter and my high humidity settings, but probably would if I shut off humidity. I also suspect it may work all night with default settings if I were running off DC but I haven't explored how to use the 12v out.

You'd can pickup LifePO4 Battery and get a inverter that has UPS functionality and will work better and keep your stuffing longer... of course will cost a lot more though
