I'd rather pay $20 more than use newegg.

Decent price for the size. It'll be the vendor (Newegg) that people will not like.

I haven't had anything but good experiences with newegg personally, same question here.

I just spent $2K at NewEgg for 2 gaming PCs last week and the purchase/shipment/PCs were all flawless. Why is there so much hatered for NewEgg? I too am wondering what the deal with NewEgg is as I haven't stayed up with the happenings with the vendor since the past 4 odd years.

I am not exactly sure either. I've read of experiences where drives arrive without good packaging, but I'm sure there are other reasons as well.

I do not buy a lot from Newegg, but I recently purchased four similar 8TB drives and they arrived nicely packaged. I have not installed them yet, but I do not expect issues based on their packaging.

I've been thinking about setting up a shared drive to upload pics from all of my phones. It would be great if there's a way to address these pics and videos from somewhere else. Any good reads as you how to set this up and would this be a good drive for that? Thanks

Can I use a WD Red Drive in a regular desktop (non NAS)? Does it consume more power? Louder than lets say black or blue? Do I need to enable or disable anything on it or will it work out of a box?

This is just a bare hard drive. You want one of the WD external drives or you want to buy/build a NAS to do so. Synology has software that'll let you do what you're talking about but I haven't tried it.

You can, but I wouldn't. The black/blue drives are cheaper for that use case.

Two ways to go forward
1) Do it for me - lookup Synology NAS system, it'll have the apps to recreate cloud storage
2) DIY - lookup Raspberry PI / Nextcloud projects - steeper learning curve though

I have bought thousands and thousands of dollars worth of stuff from Newegg over the years. They really went downhill in a big way - going from the top retailer in computer components (in my opinion) to the bottom tier. Messed up orders, horrible return policies, shady practices.

I won't buy from them unless it is an incredibly good deal or it's something simple - like tax software.

Things may be better now but they lost my computer hardware business years ago.
