If you don't have ethernet backhaul, better off spending 40 extra bucks for M9 Plus:

I've set up oodles of S4 units. They are very nice though require a smartphone if you are helping elderly who don't have one.

Get the App. Have the first one plugged into your Internet Ethernet cable (this is a router, you don't need a router in front of it), it acts like a router, you now go to the app and walk through the sign in steps, it finds the first router, has you setup the wifi name (ssid) and password, it saves it, reboots, asks if you want to setup more, same process minus the name of the wifi part, as long as they are in range of each other they create a nice mesh network. I've setup in a row before too and they work well. You can even mix and match Deco models on the same network.

I had this set for about 2 years, its very fast and effective for the price. The only downside is that theres a QOS (quality of service) filter in place that cant be turned off, only 'configured' to prefer certain traffic. As it turns out, Zoom conferencing upstream (if you're presenting HD content) triggers rate-limiting and the QOS kicks in and garbles the traffic. (before the tech support brigade shows up, yes I tried literally every setting that did exist, and complained multiple times to tplink and their only solutions were some variation of reset to defaults which means jack ****.) I upgraded to the X90 which does have a switch to turn off QOS and the problem went away. Both products were rock solid for other uses though.

While price wise this is a great deal, I just cant endorse going with older technology at this price point. Spend the extra $100 and get the X60 and you will be set for a long time when on sale at Costco.

Which of these 2 is the better deal? Watching some YT videos, the edge goes to S4, no?
M5 has 4 antennas compared to the S4 which only has 2 so the edge would go to the M5 also AC1300 vs AC1200 so it wins there too. While the S4 is a newer design it does not seem better to me.

You can run them in Access Point mode while connecting off the main TP-Link router, cause I dont think you can officially mesh a router with a deco.

Yes. If you mix and match with the M9 it needs to be the primary, but otherwise you can use backhaul to get wireless to remote areas as long as you have existing cat5 runs to each deco

From experience with other Deco products these come with 120v-220v adapters

I have the deco M9 and love it. I also like the simplified parental controls in the app.

Who has the best mesh network right now?

I've had google wifi in the past but looking to upgrade now that I have 3 times the size as before to cover.

I have ATT Fiber if that matters at all and have a couple of dead spots in the house that need extenders.

There really is no best mesh.... if you want the fastest performing but least customizable but most ease of use that would be Tp-Link with their AX5700 and x90s. If you want full customization and great speeds that would be Asus. If you want a middle ground between the two that would be Orbi Mesh. If you want something that's just reliable and works but nowhere near the top speeds of the other three thats Eero.

The single pack refurb is also available for $30!
No free shipping, but a great deal for those like me who need just one extra puck to add to their existing Deco mesh.
