Get a local library membership and install libby on your phone.
Depending on your library you won't have to pay a penny for almost any book.
Best part libby can push your borrowed books directly to your kindle.

This has a way different use case versus an iPad. If you're an avid reader, it's much easier on your eyes to read on a glare-free screen. Plus, you ever try to read on an iPad outside in the sun?

The focus of the kindle is to read books. If you're trying to do other stuff like play games, browse the internet, or stream something, then yeah, just use an iPad. But if you want to read digital books in an experience as close to a physical book as possible, then a kindle is for you. It's small, lightweight, and can carry hundreds, if not thousands, of books in one device.

This is the 10th generation regular Kindle. The Kindle Paperwhite is what you're referring to (6.8" 11th generation).

Thanks, OP! Anyone know how long this will likely last? We're on the fence about upgrading one of our kids' Kindles.

Amazon dropped the base Kindle down to $5 off the lowest price in the last year. Seems easy to legitimately remove ads too with Amazon chat using a variety of reasons.

The kids version with a basic case/cover and w/o ads is $10 more.

YMMV, I had a 15% off coupon for the ad supported version. Total was $47.30

Also included a $15 credit for kindle purchases.

Looks like it hits this price about once a month or so. Our old Gen 2 Kindle was on its second battery and just bit the dust. Been waiting for this price.

It's about $5 more than the lowest price ever w/o additional coupons.

So, if it says this,

"Purpose-built for reading with a 167 ppi glare-free display that reads like real paper, even in direct sunlight."

Then what sets the paperwhite apart from this?
