Best deal yet, this laptop slaps. Go for the open box excellent for $100 less. 6800M comparable to rtx 3080 most cases, except ray tracing.
I've honestly had multiple completely random experience with them (both store and ship). You can end up with pretty much anything but they take it back if you are not happy.

Bought the following in the past two years:

Dell G5, Excellent - looked great but had bad screen bleed, returned.
Lenovo Thinkpad, Excellent - had a bunch of sticker residue and was creaking badly, returned.
Lenovo Flex, Satisfactory - was all scratched up, warranty had expired 3 months ago. Returned.
Lenovo Flex again, Excellent - was perfect and only 3 months old.
Chromebook 1, Excellent - was perfect in box, couldn't tell it was opened.
Chromebook 2, Excellent - was perfect in box, couldn't tell it was opened.
The above Asus, Satisfactory - was perfect in box, couldn't tell it was opened except that the charger was unwrapped and it was missing the soft screen cloth they put in for shipping. It was about 5 months old.

Best of luck! I think it is worth a try especially since they haven't given me any trouble at all with the returns (yet). The real annoyance is that the sale is usually over by the time you can try for another one.

How was your open box experience? Did it come in it original box? Any visible scratches or wear?

Be careful of the open box or used one. This model is notorious for the bad application of liquid metal. The LM leaked out, short some components, and have unpredictable behavior. Those laptops got returned by customers and put back out as a used. I know that for a fact because my first one has a short as well and when I return the laptop to Bestbuy, my local store suddenly have a used-excellent condition for sale.

This one has 8 full-powered cores but I thought ML projects are best with Nvidia. Most of my ML research uses CUDA, so this one is kind of useless.

Thanks for reminding the CUDA thing. That indeed is a deal breaker

Good point on the shorted boards due to the liquid metal. Not sure how long ago this was for you, but that issue was fixed after the first batch, which had terrible QC. Fortunately, it's easy to diagnose right away.

One other issue to keep in mind is that Asus shipped out these models with RAM with very slow timings (~2600mhz). Swap it out to 3200 if that's the case, will get big performance boost.

I ordered this 2 days ago when it was $1399. I contacted BestBuy this morning, they refunded me to difference. At $1299, you won't get a better deal than this.

Once you work out all the updates, it's a great machine. YT videos benchmark it somewhere between 3070 and 3080 minus the RTX. This will last you a few years for sure if you take care of it.

There is an Open Box option for 974.99 - Satisfactory that is very tempting near me. I am a little worried about the Liquid Metal issue mentioned above, but that price is very good. Any suggestions? Or is there a way that I can test that the LM application isn't bad?

Tempted to replace my Lenovo Legion 5 with a 2060 and 9th-Gen Intel processor.
If I can flip it for $600, is another $600 worth the upgrade?
