I'm a member of a few book clubs. We all switched over to ebooks when the libraries shut down for the pandemic. Most of the books we read are 99 cents or free with kindle unlimited and I'm happy to share these recommendations with you!
1) Mother's Day - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09W5RYD2S
This one is hot off the presses as they say. Brand new and getting high praise from readers and reviewers. Our group was blown away with this one. The story starts off fairly normal, there's a murder, and a twist. But the story keeps building, the excitement, the characters, the intrigue. This one has everything and somehow this brand new best seller is only 99 cents...?! Don't miss this one.
2) Lost Contact - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08TJ3GJ3T
Another recommendation from my son, the sci-fi nut. Caveat: I try not recommend books that are part 1 of a series, because sometimes the story has a cliffhanger and you have to buy the next book to get the ending (just seems greedy). But my son said look at the description: "The Da Vinci Code meets Contact". These are literally 2 of my favorite books so I gave it a try. I'm going to recommend these at group and I hope you give it a try too.
3) Married to a Heartless Laird - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09TFBPSMH
Another recent book, this one is a historical romance novel. To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of the genre, and I avoid anything with some Fabio clone on the cover! But Meggy said it's better than most. She's our resident expert so we gave it a try at group. Like most Romance novels it has some problems (some dialog and descriptions were unnecessary to me), and our group was split down the middle on it. The ending created quite a stir at group and I think that the discussion was more exciting than the book itself! I liked the premise and loved the setting (plus there was no Fabio clone on the cover). Certainly worth 99 cents on a rainy day in May
4) Pelican Cove Mystery Series - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07Q475TKD
This series is a personal fave and it's exactly what I'm looking for on a slow weekend. This is like reading an old episode of Murder, She Wrote. The setting is cute, the story flows quickly and easily, the characters are easy to follow and like or hate. Perfect light reading for a lazy afternoon.
5) I Love Lucy, the Untold Story - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008CJALQY
This book came out quite awhile ago so fans of Lucille Ball might already have this one. It's a behind the scenes look at the show "I Love Lucy". I think if you're a fan of the show - like me! - you'll enjoy the book. It's written by one of the show's creators and has a lot of insight into the more famous episodes. Definitely worth 99 cents.
Here's a few old favorites. Can't believe these are still 99 CENTS after all this time. Be sure to grab some of these before the price goes up.
6. Last Train to Cairo - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B093YSBCD7
I just read this ebook for the second time, and I gotta say I still love it! This travel memoir tells the story of a couple's journey across Egypt after the revolution. Let's just say the trip doesn't always go right but the author is very open about what they see and do. They make a few bad choices but move forward anyway. The author's prose captivates with vivid descriptions and engaging dialogue. It's NOT a travel guide but you'll learn what it's really like to visit the pyramids and many other sights.
7. Don't Lie to Me - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07PP9N4D8
Wow, my book group loved reading this book. Is it perfect? Nope. Is it a good read? Heck yah! It's not Silence of the Lambs level of FBI procedural but its got good characters, mystery, and suspense. This is Book One in a series but you can read it as a standalone. No cliffhangers to force you into reading the whole series (unless you want to!).
8. The Good, the Bad, and the Pugly - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07S9VZZ63
Ok, this has the cutest title ever and that's all I needed to know when my club picked this ebook a couple years back. I love the setting and the premise and the characters. As I often say, this isn't Shakespeare, it's not Harper Lee, and it's not gonna change the world. But what a fun read! This is book 1 in a short series, and like a lot of books I post here, they're all FREE with Kindle Unlimited. Hope you love it.
9. The Hidden Hand of Death - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B086T371T7
Another great mystery and murder book series. Start here with Book 1. Setting is World War 2 in New York City. There are Nazis and Mobsters and Bad Cops and Good Cops and great moody settings and characters and dialogue. It's like reading your fave film noir or TV detective. A short book you'll finish in a couple hours and move on to the next I bet. There are 7 books in the series they're all 99 cents each so the price is right.
10. Lay Me to Rest - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07235NKWT
We picked this one for our group a couple years ago. It's a haunted house mystery that takes place in Wales. The setting is gorgeous, the story moves quickly, and the ending is worth the wait. Not something I typically read in summer but if you're looking for a chilling read here you go!
Note to mods: Please don't make this a frontpage deal. I like it just the way it is
