If it's a gift for the kids which they may use for their own content consumption - read / watch and also use to browse the internet or play the occasional mobile game, then yes, this iPad (or the YMMV Samsung deals on Galaxy Tab).
But if you're looking for a gift 'for the kids' which secretly you plan to use yourself too, then Xbox! Kidding, but you use it for only gaming - maybe streaming content too but then a $30 Fire TV stick does better. And there are less expensive on-ramps for gaming if you have good internet and are okay to be limited by a smaller catalog - Stadia, XBox GamePass Cloud, Amazon Luna.
Remember, iPad will see more hours of use (potentially) for a fewer number of years (battery deteoriation, Hardware becoming outdated or chance of damage from falls). Whereas an XBox, despite being a Series 'S' belongs to a recent generation of console - you don't expect to see significantly improved versions release every year. Also this stays in one place on the entertainment console. So this should be good for 5-8 years or even beyond that with reduced chance of hardware failure.
Not a pro advice, but just sharing my thoughts between the two products for kids.
