I got this 2 weeks ago and it's been working great. I got it specifically to use it for hot pot but I find it really useful for boiling water or making soup. One down side of gas cooktop is that it takes forever to boil water so it's nice to take this out to save some time. The downside is that it does have a fan that's pretty noticeable, you'll definitely know it's running. I purchased from their eBay store and the item was shipped with a shipping label directly on the retail box. Luckily nothing is damaged.

I used my power meter and it's running just shy of 15amps and about 1700watts.

This is great for normal cooking as long as you have compatible cookware. I set my rice to go 20 minutes and it turns itself off, awesome.

However, it will not sustain a super high heat that's preferable for searing steaks. It'll get initially hot but then ramp down.

I've had this for a few weeks now and it's still a buy for me (for occasional use). The coil whine & fan noise are louder than I expected but not so much that I don't want to use it. It boils water/soup quick!

An oddity with my unit (not sure if its just me) is that the cooktop will turn itself back on after I turn it off (which also turns on the fans). I have to unplug it when we're done...
This is my 2 cents. Test it yourself if you want.

1st, don't leave anything hot on it. It try to cool down by turning on the fan.

2nd, It can detect if there is a workable pot on it. If not, it won't turn on. You can test it yourself. Put on a none induction pot with water, it will never boil that water. Or you can remove the pot while cooking, it'll beep telling you your pot is GONE.

3rd, it also have heat sensor. I find this feature a bit annoying but when it get overheat it will shut down the induction. This get annoying especially when deep fry, need to be hotter than usual and it trigger the overheat after long use (french fry).

Since the fan is annoying, I turn off the power after I'm done cooking and remove anything hot from the cook top letting it cool down. I think your fan turn back on because it detect the heat hot enough for it needing the fan to cool down.

any good for getting oil hot enough to deep-fry outdoors with extension cord in 40f temps?

Sorry it says "Infrared" like this model

Ovente Electric Double Infrared Burner 7.75 & 6.75 Inch Ceramic Glass Hot Plates Cooktop, 5 Level Temperature Control & Easy Clean Stainless Steel Base, Portable Stove Dorm & Office, Black BGI102B https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B08V4...EXBRZFMRHK
Induction is better, only downside is the noisy fan. Oh ya, the cookware need to be compatible with induction, else it won't work.

Yes. It goes to 400F+ but oil only needs to get to 375F to deep fry stuff.

Maybe check out an air fryer? The cook area is enclosed and no oil is needed. More efficient and healthier regardless the difference of the results.

Why not just say it, like standing next to a jet engine. Oh well, great for cooking and doesn't heat up the house like other method of cooking.
Ditto on it doesn't heat up the house. Huge plus for the summers

make sure you get a non-stick pan with metal bottom if you plan to fry things

Oh interesting. Well, I didn't work through the numbers but it seems to me if you rely solely upon infrared heating (and probably substantial convection) it would be less effective and longer to head than direct H field induction. Ite appears that those heating elements are substantially below the glass surface so you'd have to heat that glass surface first and then conduct/convect to the pan. If you look at some of the review pictures you will see it's just a standard heating element buried underneath the glass (like a standard flat top cook top)

you can't set it to max power rather than temperature and keep it heating?

Induction is awesome if your cookware is compatible. Also it doesn't heat up your house as much. Your aluminum frying pans won't work. Most of your older stainless cookware won't work. If you don't have much cookware, get induction compatible.

I use this next to my grill to deep fry shrimp, very handy, doesn't leave the house smelling like oil, same goes for cooking bacon

Huh? Half the pleasure of cooking bacon is the aroma. In my book, they should make bacon scented air-fresheners!
