100% I feel like hotels are minimum 50% more. Food seemed to be similar to bay area prices. You more at the $15-20 range even on cheap eats. Plus car rentals are still wild like $700 a week.

If it's just two people traveling, you can rent a U-Haul van for $20/day. MPG will be terrible, and there is a per-mile fee, but the good thing is it's an island.
Recently went to Maui.

A standard room at Hyatt Regency was $700 before tax and fees.

Crazy thing is my Uber driver told me that a year ago, there was a shortage of car rentals so people rented uHauls. LOL

What are you talking about? You can fit a family of 11 in the back.

Hehe the cargo van with only front seats is $20/day.

Some locations do have 15-passenger van with more seats. I seen it for like $120/day for Maui, which actually isn't terrible if you travel with an entourage

Precisely the problem, often cheapest Hawaii fare stop at another island or on west coast

Damn Hyatt Regency Maui is $780 a night + 40 resort fee and they are not taking points. I got like 200k points, but worthless if they keep blocking the use of points, I keep seeing this more and more lately.

Points are not what they once were.

I can understand why car rental is up, but why are hotel prices up? Everyone is traveling to Hawaii right now or something and vacancy is limited? Or are they short staffed?

Check a bag and bring a tent. I rented a Hipcamp site for $35 a night last November on Oahu.

Play around with the dates, including trying 3-night bookings, single day bookings, and other creative ways. The award space usually fills up especially if you're not booking a few months out from your trip. I had a fun time with my family there back in 2018. Just as an example, when I tried Andaz Maui, 3-night and 5-night increments worked, but other combinations didn't for whatever reason.

Also some general tips from my upcoming trip to Kauai, Turo rentals aren't covered by your personal insurance in many cases as well as your credit card protections. Turo's included insurance itself seems iffy so if you're risk-adverse or not the best driver, it's not a great choice.

Another rental car trip is to try Costco travel. For my trip, there were zero rentals available through Costco. I ended up checking for hotels, and their hotels + car rental packages are available and ended up being much cheaper than my individual car rental + AirBNB at the time.

I didn't realize you could change your rental dates and keep your hotel dates separate, so for example I did Hilton Garden Inn Kauai for 2 nights, and then changed the rental car dates for 6 days. Doing Grand Hyatt for the other 3 nights.

Second cheapest option was through the Capital One portal where I was quoted $804 for 6 days. All the other websites I checked were all in the $950+ range.

Hotels and a rental car will just bankrupt you on a limited budget, so I've been mitigating them with Chase Points(Grand Hyatt in Kauai for 25K-29K/night, Hyatt Regency/Andaz Maui in Maui), and Capital One miles to pay for all other travel related cash expenses(Venture/Venture X card.)

Some stops go the opposite direction of your final destination, which is silly.
Some even make a stop at Jesus's house; not all tho.
