Check the dorm rules. No dorms at my college allowed anything like this, not even a traditional coffee pot.

Would this be good for a new student in a dorm?

That's a good idea, and we have one of those -- thank you!

This thing works great! Water is almost about to boil in a minute, and the cooktop display alternates between the temperature and elapsed time, so you know how long you've been cooking! I can hard boil eggs in 12 minutes, which includes time from cold pan to adding eggs to almost boiling water at 1 minute mark. Bacon begins crackling 15-20 seconds after the cooktop is turned on, it's kinda crazy. And unlike conventional gas/electric wires that turn orange, this doesn't raise ambient heat like a hot plate. Regular 110v plug. At $35, it's a no brainer. Just ensure your cookware will work(if a magnet will stick to it, it'll work!) with induction.

Yeah.... it's much better AND safer than a hotplate.
These are also very useful in dorm rooms. [piphardware.com]

Bought one for same price from previous front page deal. Works great! Boils water in under a minute which is incredible.

We've used air fryers exclusively and they're ok for fries and veggies, but they have tendency to dry out chicken. At least, that's been our experience. The induction cooker cooks everything normal and is about the size of a large text book (easy storage)

Probably. I wish I had one in my dorm when I was in college.

That's exactly what my wife said when I told her about it. Looks like a no-go.
