I've been hearing from dermatologists that Neosporin is not recommended and can lead to allergic reactions and scaring. Cleaning the wound with soap and water and sealing with a hydrocolloid bandages would be ideal, but those hydrocolloid products are pretty pricey

Nonsense. My 1.5 yo scratched his face in the evening (large surface, not deep, and I didn't notice) and next morning the wound was red. 1.5 years later he has a scar from that infection. When I apply Simply Neosporin (version w/o neomycin), similar wounds heal quickly with no scarring. Neomycin leaks to blood, the other 2 antibiotics stay on surface, hence I use the Simply Neosporin.

Doesn't this have the same active ingredients as generic triple antibiotic you can get at walmart or the dollar store? Walmart has like 1oz for $.88 iirc. This seems like alot of cash

Lot of debate on whether we should be using this stuff at all, do your own research.

It's gotta depend on the brand and such. Neosporin I've been fine with, while some other brands I've had allergic reactions to.

And as for people saying it heals faster without it, it really depends on the location, the wound, etc.

15 year RN here- bacitracin/AAA and neosporin are not really needed unless you have a real concern for infection and even then only sparingly and do not really compensate for cleaning the wound and using a dressing. We tend to avoid Vaseline based ointments as they can lead to increased moisture and cause wounds to be too wet and interfere with healing.
