Not sure if anyone got the code who signed up, because the email to claim the code was sent out on 4/28 and it was for the first 700 people. So if you weren't signed up before 4/28 or not one of the first 700, you will probably not get a code, unless they change the requirements.

Naturally, the recent pricing has peaked my interest, so I did some investigating.

It seems that HP "sorta" botched this one.

People like:
-Things that look and perform cheap, that are cheap.
-Things that look cheap and perform well, that are mid-priced.
-Things that look and perform like high-end, that are priced accordingly.

Apparently, people do not like:
-Things that look high end and perform poorly, that are mid-priced. Which is this model in a nutshell.

I've owned this chromebook for 2 months. Stylus failed on me in less than a month. Returned for a new one, then the stylus died on me in little over a month, out of the return window. Bought a Duet 5 chromebook to test it out and the gen2 Snapdragon 7C runs laps around the X2 11 in day to day use. Fought with HP to initiate a buy-back, as their stylus pens were out of stock.

As another user posted, top build-quality and perfect tablet-sized chromebook with keyboard that ultimately fails with mediocre performance and for me, a failing stylus.

I agree, I owned one of these briefly and while the build quality was nice, I felt like the performance just wasn't there. The Chromebook Duet, which can easily be gotten on sale cheaper, was actually preferable to me (especially since you can get it with 128gb too!)

I would agree with the above statements, but it seems at $299 this might finally be worth a look. I think it was fair to be critical of performance at $599 launch price, but at $299 it is competing with some very low end devices.

I mean, the nice pen and keyboard case that are included could cost $299 alone for a surface or ipad, so in one sense the tablet is almost free.

I also owned one of these for a month or so but eventually had to return it - partly due to the performance and partly due to my realization that ChromeOS simply can't meet my needs.

However, this still is a relatively unique device at its price point, and for me the best thing about it is that aspect ratio. If the LTE model came on sale I would be really tempted against my better judgment Smilie

I did hear they may update this device with the second gen of this chip, but it would have to be a drastic improvement on the first gen to even be worth looking at, IMO.

Question for the Chromebook experts: is there anyway to use this as a second screen for a Win/Mac laptop? It's got a 2k screen and I think it would be cool if you could use it that way when necessary, but then it's a full fledged Chromebook when not connected to a laptop. The portable monitors go for around $200-250 so this isn't much more to get a 2nd screen and a Chromebook. Just thinking aloud here with my obscure use case.

This is a low end chip with cheap storage. Emmc over UFS 2/3? They cut many corners on this

You can use Duet Display app on a Chromebook (it was once a free Chromebook perk offer), or use a USB to HDMI capture device to plug in an HDMI service. The first may have some lag, but may be more functional since that's it's purpose, the second would limit resolutions (pretty much whatever the capture card can do, usually 1080p at 30Hz), but you wouldn't need additional software on your connected PC. Overall, better off getting a sub $150 portable monitor, everything else here would be hacky and wouldn't allow you to use full display capabilities anyway.

But the thing is that ARM can be pretty, but the processor choice wasn't a good one. While Lenovo released the Duet 5 with 7c Gen 2, HP sticked to the Gen 1, that has lower performance.

Also, Mediatek has released since the Kompanio 828 that is much better than the 7c while being similary priced, and the Kompanio 1380 will help a lot to close the gap while remaining cheap.

My dream is a Chromebook with a DImensity 9000-type of chip tho.

I still wouldn't buy a Ferrari with a Prius engine EVER. With items like the excellent value Asus 17.3" 1080p Chromebook hitting $149, it's hard to say "competes with".

Does it use WACOM tech for the stylus?

I hate Microsofts N-Trig tech for drawing.
