PLEASE consider the Kindle Paperwhite 6.8 for kids [amazon.com] instead. It's also $120, comes without ads, a free cover ($30 value?), and an extra year warranty. All for exactly the same hardware as the regular Kindle Paperwhite. It has been pointed out that coupons that sometimes work on the regular Paperwhite usually don't on the Paperwhite for Kids, but the extra still makes up for that... usually.

I can't tell if the one on GameStop is the ad free version.

That's why price matched it from Best buy to get an ad free version for the same price
That said, if you're not going to read on it for hundreds of hours, I agree, don't waste your money on an almost identical device.
