Even if you are a DIY'er I recommend at least having a pro check your work for leaks, etc. Probably cost around 200 bucks for a full testing, but worth it for piece of mind.

I bought this last year, installed it myself having no hvac experience. I used it as a heat pump all winter. Its worked well and both the indoor and outdoor units are dead quiet.

I have a dedicated 20amp plug for ac in my house. I do a bit of demo to expose the wire and connect it outside, but I'm curious - anyone wire one of these to a plug from the inside instead of hard wiring?
Yes, temporarily, until I had more time to hardwire it and provide the disconnect. Worked just fine for testing the unit out and using it for a few weeks.

Electrical code requires an outdoor disconnect within a few feet of the outdoor unit, AFAIK, as well as a 110V outlet for emergencies. 20 amps is enough to run this, so you can fish that line outside, put a disconnect, and then wire this to the disconnect. You'll need to figure out the outlet separately, since the existing 20-amp wire won't leave you a way to hook that up.

This one suggested earlier says"low ambient" for cold climates [homedepot.com]. Will this unit also work fine in a very hot desert? The one that is not low ambient is $1338....

Would this be enough for a 1700 Sq ft house? Some of that Doesn't need ac.. just don't want to overwork the unit

Very Unlikely. Even if all of the footage is on 1 floor, the further rooms are unlikely to be cooled sufficiently.

I have four rooms that are in a row with a small sidewalk along the back wall of each room.

Does it make more sense to get four of these units or other config (e.g. 2 x 2 mini-split)?

I'm leaning on not doing a 4 mini-split unit as the hoses aren't long enough. Two, two mini-split placed between every two rooms, make the most sense to me.

I wanted to get some thoughts on this before I bit the bullet.

Probably not. Figure about 10-12K BTU for a 400 sqft room, under fairly typical conditions. https://www.calculator.net/btu-calculator.html

Unsure of the answer to this question but i would assume it would work ok. It says up to 122 degrees. There is another one that is slightly smaller with the same claim for a few hundred less: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Pione.../314090069

We went with a multi-zone system last year because of space constraints. I advise a completely separate unit per zone if at all possible. If multiple rooms share one outdoor condenser, you lose the ability to "climate control" them individually, they all have to either heat or cool (same direction) together. It's only really a concern during shoulder season when some rooms are cooler and others are hotter, but it's still a concern.

Thank you. OP says free shipping, and it isn't really. If anyone is wondering, these are heavy and awkward. Don't drop it, or you could accidentally leak out all the refrigerant. The last one I ordered from HD, they delivered it right into my garage.

Really depends on the layout. A 12k unit is pretty big but since there is no circulation between rooms it will be controlled well in the room you put the unit is slowly fall off as you get further from that location.
