"Qlease clarify when I need to buy the hub vs. buying just the switch?
A: If you just want to control a rocker switch or a button either with your mobile phone (via free app and Bluetooth), or set timers inside, the you don't necessarily need the SwitchBot Hub.
If you want to make the SwitchBots work with Alexa, Google Assistant, IFTTT and more, or just for remote control, then the Hub is necessary as a Bluetooth to Wi-Fi gateway."
Very cool little gadget, I'll pick up another just in case I find another use for it. The other commenters are correct, you need the hub to get this thing on your Wifi and control it when you're not home. Otherwise, I have to get my phone in bluetooth range.

I always wanted excuse to get one.
Already own the hub and 3 curtain controllers.
I have a few for Coffee machine, fireplace switch, normal switch without a neutral line for smart switch (slight ugly, but works). Also this seems the lowers price at least in recent years (most I bought at $22).
without a hub, it works as Bluetooth one, so you need to be relatively close to it to control. so finally I get a hub mini to control them ( the hub mini can make the TV a little bit smart, such as turn on by voice, so not too bad)

I picked one up for an ice machine. My Samsung fridge's ice maker broke again and I was tired of bitching at Samsung to get them to fix it for free/low cost (kept mentioning the class action lawsuit) and bought an ice maker. Ice is a pretty crucial thing to have since our PHX summer is just starting. However that thing sounds like a jet engine so I had it plugged into a spare smart plug that turned it off at night. Unfortunately, the smart plug turning on didn't turn on the machine, you'd need to press the on button too. Switchbot now turns it on/off for me so I can have really cold cold brew in the morning!
I have it set just on a timer w/o the hub. Likely going to pick up a second switch as backup.
