When wd refurbishes do they just replace the drive and reuse the shell or do they refurb the actual drive itself? Anyone have good/bad experiences with refurb from wd?

I have two replacement drives which were both refurbs. A 1., both sent as warranty replacements for failed new drives. An old MyBook (with firewire and USB 2.0) and a 750GB Passport. The MyBook is probably 12yo, while the Passport is 10yo.

They both run to this day (although only sporadically used) The shell will say "recertified in Malaysia" or whatever country the drive comes from.

Thats more than enough proof to me that its more-or-less new. Considering that they made the drives in Malaysia and thats where the supply chain terminates.

Alot of certified stock has been retail drives that a maker has had in inventory that never made it to store shelves. Many of these products with software that expired, returns and old retail inventory that cannot send to stores, so they use them as replacements or recertified stock. They just remove all retail packaging and put it in a white\brown box and sell it to the masses.

my last easybook 14TB was 7200rpm for $200. ill take that over a refurb drive thats $20 cheaper

I'm happy to report I received a brand new WD140EDFZ, shucked and running perfectly in my JBOD enclosure. Thankfully no APM enabled in its firmware either! It performs the same as my last 7200 easystore, which is great considering it's a 5400. It even runs cooler, and is very quiet.
