I contacted Costco through chat to confirm 90 day return policy does not apply to this system and they confirmed it could be returned even after 90 days if something is wrong with the system. Please let me know what you guys think, good deal?
Would they record video? Absolutely.
Was the image clear and sound crisp? You bet.
But I dreaded having to use the software to quickly check a motion event or export a clip. Once you'd used more modern software from Google or Arlo, these things seem archaic.
Unifi Protect is the only software that is comparable to the cloud storage solutions without the need for cloud storage. Don't get me wrong, you pay a high price for the cameras and equipment but that is due to the superior software.

Hi @soby
In general you have choices:
1) Quality of image capture, on premise, no monthly charges.
2) Quality of UI mobile app, cloud based, monthly charges.
( monthly fees, allows these companies to pay software developers to continuously improve the UI .. )
UniFi .. iirc their cameras are not as good compared to what you can find for less ..
So, I have found that no solution will give me the maximum of what I wanted .. so I compromised with a
A) core IP POE system to get good quality images
and
B) a few cloud based cameras
and
C) core security alarm system
one day perhaps things will change .. thus to me the most important part is running the cabling to the proper places ..

If you have a Dahua Q-see system you could have reconfigured it to get access remotely ..
Yes, it would have not been a simple scan the QR code and go .. ( normally scan the QR code and go is a recipe for trouble in terms of network security .. )
Remember if you have a system that uses standards you can often re-configure them.
Q-see was a very small vendor, and the Pandemic seemed to have killed them.
Lorex is a larger brand now owned by Dahua ..

Systems and standards -> I will have to punch holes in my firewall for remote access and then have the constant worry of exposing an outdated software system to the internet ..
The main advantage with company apps pushing alerts clips is that the boxes push events or streams onto company or public clouds and then the apps can connect to the servers in the cloud
It is showing price of $999 at the moment. Is there a coupon code to get it for 750?

Yes .. I am completely aware of the info sec / computer security issues .. they are a constant issue, and most do not have any concerns about them.
Thus personally, I isolate my core IP PoE system from the internet.
I also isolate the WiFi segment, and the IoT segments ...
pfsense is a great tool
If I need access into the system, I use a VPN
fwiw - I highly recommend everyone to do something along the lines of blocking UPnP and P2P on your router and control as much as possible.
fyi - there are some vpn notes at ipcamtalk for those looking to setup vpn .. if you have a router that supports it you can look at openvpn ...
