I still wish I had never wasted money on one of these. The quality of Plex's apps has really started to suffer over the last few years and they have no problem with letting showstopping bugs plague the software for several months (if not years) at a time. Even if everything actually worked, there really just aren't that many useful features that require a Plex pass anymore.
Sadly these days Plex seems so concerned with monetizing everything possible and pushing their own content that they no longer care about the core product. They still can't even properly test things, so just a few weeks ago one of their blunders resulted in restricted kids accounts being shown XXX porn images when doing a simple search. At this point Plex has lost it's focus, apparently has no clue what QA means, and seems to be more concerned with squeezing every dime they can out of the product instead of actually releasing stable software.

I bought Plex pass at $76 and I regret it.
Plex is so buggy and the devs don't give a crap about the core product anymore.

EDIT: I should clarify my comment for fellow SDers. I have gotten a lot of joy out of the app over the years, but I definitely wouldn't buy it again now.
IMO Emby and especially JellyFin have far, FAR superior interfaces and buying the "Infuse" app is a better buy,.

If you do go with Plex and run iOS, do yourself a favor and buy Prism Music and Prologue for iOS. Thank me later. Prism Music is the BEST music player I have ever used in my entire life. It beats Marvis, Apple Music, everything.Prologue is a Plex compatible audiobook.

Edit 2: Some people asking me what kinds of problems I have with Plex. Missing movies galore (MKV especially), music names blank, music artwork not showing up or showing up with incorrect artwork from another song. I tried everything, nothing fixes it.

I have the Plex pass for lifetime live TV guide data without having to pay a subscription. I think the Plex + HDHR and an antenna is still the best option for live local TV streaming that doesn't require a complete internet cable package subscription at $50+/mo.

That said if there are better alternatives I am open to trying new things.

I concur... But also, I'm not sure I would even trust Plex enough to have porn on the server that I'm not wanting people to see. 😂

That's the worst part... Those porn images were not being shown because people were storing porn on their servers, they were coming from Plex's own search results. There was no way to disable it until Plex released a new version and killed that feature until they could properly fix the issue.

Holy shiz. I guess I'm glad I had Plex search disabled. I have just my server listed.. my kids use it all the time!

I don't regret grabbing lifetime for $76. I have used plex for a really long time so having given the company $76 seems reasonable. That said, I wouldn't do it today. As mentioned, they don't really care about the core product anymore. It still works well enough for me but I could definitely see swapping to something else for my media server needs.

ATM the only feature I actually use that requires a plex pass is the intro skip.

I use Plex free and it's great for me but I agree with others that it seems to be giving issues recently. What are some good alternatives? Needs to be easy to use for family (think - grandparents!) because Plex interface is very streamlined, making it easy to use for them.

Thought about getting this because I do like and enjoy plex but all my devices at home do not require transcoding and I do not watch movies remotely. You do not need this subscription If others fall in this category.

"Better" of course is subjective... Emby is definitely more stable overall. There are things I like better about Plex's UI, but it can be like putting lipstick on a pig when core features don't work right. In my opinion, Emby is the better of the two because it just works and it does everything that I need it to do. Plex is prettier, but the various glitches and bugs are too annoying for me.

Doesn't matter if you had things disabled or not, those images still would have shown up in the search results before Plex had to pull it back.

Channels DVR is probably the best out there if you use a supported device, but there is a monthly fee for it.
I originally bought my Plex pass years ago for the DVR features as well, but it was always too unreliable and buggy. I think they finally fixed some of the worst long standing issues earlier this year, but considering their history of ignoring showstopping bugs for months/years and (seemingly) introducing 2 new bugs every time they fix 1, I have very little faith in their ability to continually deliver a stable product.

Plex's updates and track record as of late reminds me of Ubiquiti in the networking arena. Great hardware, but the software bugs and lack of fixing existing bugs before piling on more bugs is ridiculous.

I was a Plex user for years and figured I should buy a lifetime pass a few years ago to support the devs. I didn't even care for the additional features. I really regret purchasing a license though. It's gone downhill and gets worse with each update. It's slower, full of ads, and the GUI changes are terrible.

Try Jellyfin instead if you want same features as Plex but don't want to pay and it also has a decent UI
