This is a lie. The top vent is made of cast iron and it mounts on ceramic. There is absolutely 0 aluminum shavings owing to the fact that there is nothing aluminum in that area.

Not as nice as the newer models, but you can't beat this price for a big joe. Great deal.

So tempting.... But just the pain of dealing with something so heavy. Am I going to end up hating this thing anytime I want to move it. The Costco Classic II might be more worth it just to deal with something more manageable.

Great price, If I didn't have the Costco Vision model already, I would pull the trigger. I looked at both the inside bowl is beefier on the Joe but at the time it was double the price. The Vision does a great job. It may not hold heat as long as a Joe, but it can hold a constant 225 all day.

What do the newer models have that's better?

I was looking at the Costco one, which I believe is a II, but is 18" vs 24"

The gen 1 KJ have a spring assist hinge to help raise the lid, gen 2 and 3 have an air shock assist that makes the lid much easier to lift. I almost bought this grill on Black Friday but seeing multiple reports of the lid on the BJ 1 falling made me think twice. I recently was able to compare a gen 1 classic to a gen 2 classic and the weight of the lid (due to the difference in hinges) was a huge difference. I can only imagine how heavy the lid of the big joe is. Also, there are other minor differences but the hinge is the biggest difference that I'm aware of.

I picked this up a couple weeks ago for a bit more. It's a great grill and a fantastic deal. I don't find the lid weight burdensome at all.

In addition to what was said above, the top vent is different, but not really in a super meaningful way. The other major difference for me (besides the air lift hinge) is the gasket. The gasket on the 1 is a felt-like material, nomex, that will burn and eventually leak air and need to be replaced. It's not super expensive or difficult, but it's kind of messy and not a ton of fun to pull the old one off and get a new one on. The 2 and 3 have a fiberglass mesh gasket that should last as long as you do and not ever leak. If you're wondering what a fiberglass mesh gasket looks like, go open your oven and check out the gasket in there.

I guess maybe I worded that funny, but the weight isn't so much the issue when it comes to lifting by hand, more so the weight of the lid over powering the spring hinges ability to keep the lid up and open on its own. I'd hate to have the lid fall on its own and potentially damage the ceramic. I do believe KJ made an upgrade kit for the gen 1 grills to put the new style hinge on though.

Yes and no. The airlift hinge on the gen 2/3 isn't compatible with the gen 1 BJ and there is no way to make it so. But I think they redesigned the gen 1 hinge. Might be partially counterbalanced - looks more like the gen 2 anyway. But it is not the same hinge as on the gen 2 grills.

Saw it in Costco, the top chimney is aluminum, aluminum shavings were falling off when I adjust it, falling on your food. Nope for me.
You sure you weren't looking at a gen 2? Gen 1, which is what's for sale here, should have the cast iron daisy wheel. As far as I know, that hasn't changed.

This is not correct. The big Joe 1s chimney is made out of cast iron (even says cast iron on the product page). Are you even sure it was the Big Joe 1 that you saw?
