I generally have 200 tabs open, as well as other memory intensive programs. The M1 laptops are amazing (I use one), but the M1 isn't magical and doesn't change physics. The memory for programs lives somewhere, either in RAM or on the SSD. Once the RAM is full, the extra memory needed is stored on the SSD. In other words, if you need a lot of RAM, there will be many writes/swaps to the SSD, even if it's nearly instantaneous and barely noticeable to the user. If I were to try to use 8GB of RAM I would likely be writing hundreds of GB to the page file daily, wearing out the SSD prematurely, possibly within 2-3 years. Even with 16GB of RAM I still have heavier writes than I'd prefer.

The solution isn't "use fewer tabs" or "close programs" since I know my optimal work flow and use a device that can handle it. I understand the desire for 16GB of RAM (or even more).

Because MacBook Air configurations with 16 GB RAM are available and sold by apple, they just aren't available at Costco...if 16 GB RAM was completely unnecessary in a MacBook Air then why does Apple make a version with it in general?

Also some people just want to future-proof their laptop

Is this also on sale in store for 19.99 like in the past? Or online only?
The last time they had it online, someone commented in store was regular price.

This is definitely true. I think there were a few scattered reports of stores having it at the sale price, but by and large in-store was regular price. Maybe different this time around?

Gotcha. If anybody could weigh in, I'd appreciate it.
I would say that one with the 1660 super will game at 1440p for most current eSports titles, but if you want to future proof or get into games with more visual fidelity, you would want to look for a machine with a 3070 or equivalent. Prices have been going down, so something to consider, especially if you think you could build your own.

There are a couple of things I'm trying to find out and it's hard to tell from the Costco website.

I have two monitors and I'm wondering which types of ports are available. HMDI, DVI, display port? How many are available?

Given that it is an XPS, I'm thinking that it most likely has space to expand. How many other hard drives or SSD drives can be supported by space and by connection to the mother board?

Thanks.

Dubious distinction of being the most expensive 3050 laptop at $2000? I am not sure if all that ram and ssd space and 4K screen can make up for that price!

I see several 12th-gen Intel laptops and only one 6th-gen Ryzen laptop. Come on, AMD, you gotta push these manufacturers to treat you the same as Intel!
AMD APUs unfortunately have tended to have fairly capable integrated graphics compared to Intel, which most laptop manufacturers hate because it potentially impacts sales of their much more profitable "gaming" laptops. Properly configured, you can play most modern titles on 1080p - 60fps - medium details with an AMD processor like the Ryzen 7 5700U. Of course, even the manufacturers that use AMD will often make sure to NOT properly configure them by pulling stunts like only installing one stick of non-upgradeable soldered ram, thereby locking the CPU from running in dual-channel memory mode and crippling it's graphics performance. There is a long and frustrating tradition in the PC industry of manufacturers self-sabotaging their products to force shoppers upmarket for better performance, and I think the way AMD's laptop SKUs are handled is part of that tradition.

Maybe less than $800. Not looking for Apple products.
Screen size is open but not larger that 15.6"

For lightweight and expandability, nothing beats the xenia 14in imo. it's barely two lb. Has two sodimm slots to upgrade all the way to 64GB ram, two nvme slots, one HDMI 2.0 and two usb-c with PD and DP functions. All for $700:

For ruggedness, the acer enduro urban N3 14in is hard to beat for $570. It has two sodimm slots for upgrading ram all the way to 64gb also. As well as usb-c with DP and PD and HDMI 2.0. However it is heavier at 4lb and sized like a 15in laptop:

For an all around 15.6in laptop, the costco HP pavilion for $550 is very good. It also have two sodimm slots, one usb-c with PD and DP, and HDMI 2.0. It's about 3.9lb:

All three of these also have backlit keyboards. The xenia screen is actually 1920X1200, slightly higher resolution than 1080p in the other two. the HP has a touchscreen
