How long until phone is unlocked?

Turns out it's 6 months for the phone to be unlocked. I'll pass.

These deals are useless unless you have a corporate store nearby.

Metro is a dirtball company. They hire scammy people who are trained to try shady stuff all of the time. Even the corporate stores have become shady. Stay away from these scammers and give your money to a more reputable company rather than these POS losers.

Damn, I don't want them to photocopy my ID. That sounds shady. I guess I'll have to pass on this deal. That's too bad.
this is the major problem w M deals.

each store "makes up " there own rulez

i wouldn't pass on the deal.

if nearest CS [or AD] is a reasonable distanced for you...go to store.
with intent of getting deal.
see what they require.
push back on nonsense requirements.

I guess I should be able to use the phone with T-Mobile and at some point later can ask T-Mobile to unlock it? Has anyone tried that?

I have a $15 T mobile (not metro) prepaid plan (my own phone)for a couple months to test reception in my area.

A couple days ago, I went to Metro intending to port a Boost # I've used awhile, for a phone deal, BTW he said Iphone 11 requires $60 not $40 plan WTF

Then he says the T mobile plan he found in the system (didn't mention since unrelated to Metro transaction & was BYOP) excludes me from any phone promotion or discount over $100 WTF!

This can't be right, I received no benefit, no phone, nada with $15 plan and yes, it was a corporate store in CA

I love this deal. This is good for anyone who can wait 6 months to unlock.

I took 2 phones (Samsung Galaxy A53) and 1 phone (Samsung Galaxy A13) in this deal. They said they can not give any more free phones. I will wait for 6 months and unlock them.

Not sure when can I visit the store to buy free phones again.

I believe they should accept locked metro phone.

Why would you trade in at Best Buy when Apple offers $320 Vs BB offer of $215

Most charge activation fees ($20+), require you to bundle accessories to get promo pricing (cases, screen protectors, chargers, extended warranties, etc. all at Best Buy level prices), and some just flat out refuse to honor promos in general. You also have to provide your drivers license in most cases which is intended to prevent promo abuse, but is just uncomfortable in general with the sketchiness of many authorized dealers and the concept of prepaid.

Corporate stores (owned / operated by T-Mo) don't have these issues other than the ID requirement, and I would trust T-Mo with my ID much more than joe schmoe's prepaid emporium.

Yes, they can and will. Like most promos, there is always a disclaimer about participation varying. Corporate let's the authorized dealer stores run wild. I think it's a tight spot for T-Mo to be in because of how Metro was built before the acquisition. They know the AD stores are bad for the overall perception of the brand, but they're also somewhat essential because they serve a lot of areas that wouldn't be economical for T-Mo to own and operate corporate stores. The sim locking to device (where you have to go through Metro to swap sims on the same phone - different than the sim carrier lock that doesn't allow you to use a VZW sim) is also a bone they throw to dealers that hurts the product. It's a catch-22.

As others have said, if you must deal with an AD store and they demand add-ons, target carrier ad-ons like insurance through Metro because you can at least cancel and get partial refunds of some those through Metro directly after you've left the store.
Providing prospective from behind the counter. Many, many years ago I worked in the wireless industry at authorized dealers for all 4 major carriers as well as numerous MVNOs including MetroPCS. MetroPCS was (and may still be) by far the most heavy handed on the way they dealt with dealers... BUT you got the feeling they would mostly overlook things if you met or exceeded quotas. Though it always felt like you were being treated as a 2nd-class partner. This was in stark contrast to a company like T-Mobile which felt like a silent, helpful partner (that's my recollection at the time and before they purchased MetroPCS).

If you didn't meet a month's quota (wether it be activations, price plans, specific add-ons, insurance, etc.), you got reduced or no allocation for phones. As you might imagine, not having phones during promotions is extremely detrimental to business. Dealers were highly encouraged to push add-ons and higher priced plans. From a purely monetary prospective, it makes sense to upsale even if it isn't always customer-friendly. Some did it with salesmanship while others just flat-out required add-ons and/or accessories. What you might perceive as "honest" dealers, that strictly followed promotions, and did not place additional requirements on customers quickly found themselves without phones, sometimes deauthorized, and out of business. The culture in a sense mostly bred out "honest" dealers but it also helped to grow the carrier's business.

Dealers made next to nothing on phones themselves and SIM cards are purchased from MetroPCS or a Master Agent with cost being higher than from most other carriers... nothing is free to dealers. Asking a dealer, especially 1 you don't normally patronage, to provide you a free SIM is asking them to lose money. Most of the profit came from activations, add-ons, in-store fees, and accessories (which are usually very high margins). That's why these are heavily pushed during sales... They are a business after all. If a rep didn't give you the sales pitch, they aren't doing their job. If it's optional, just kindly decline. In the end, ask first and take your business elsewhere if the deal doesn't fancy you. You are encouraged to call ahead to ask questions to save time and frustration.

* DISCLAIMER: this is 1 person's opinion from years of industry experience from many years in the past within a certain geographical region. This in no way reflects MetroPCS or it's authorized dealers as a whole. Furthermore, things may have changed since then.
