Someone above said "car/RV battery" -- actually if you will use this for any long term discharge loads other than momentary vehicle starting you should only get a deep cycle type battery which a normal car battery anyway isn't going to be rated for.

Speaking of batteries -- for a small-medium sized fixed site battery installation (like 2-6 decent size batteries) what battery products / types / vendors are suggested for being overall lifetime most cost effective, reliable, durable, etc.? I don't have a preconceived notion of needing flooded lead acid, sealed lead acid, AGM, gel cell, lithium iron phosphate just looking for about 24V and a few hundred amp hours of deep cycle capacity to start. The area doesn't get persistently hot, though it does freeze overnight for several weeks over winter and have cool high humidity nights / mornings for several months out of the year.
So maybe charge between 400W-1000W part of the day and have batteries available the rest of the time.

So what are the metrics for cost per Ah and cost per charge cycle (assuming thousands of partial or occasionally nearing full discharge recharges over the life time of the batteries)?

What is going to be better total cost of ownership for maintenance, battery box heating requirements, service life in years vs. cost?

And where does one get "slick deals" on deep cycle batteries other than some of the fancy LiFeP power banks occasionally advertised here (which is not so much what I'm thinking of here presuming higher cost and less scalability vs. basic battery products DIYed)?

Careful if you go down this rabbit hole...

I was looking for something about modifying my Goal Zero Yeti and stumbled upon his youtube channel first, then his forums.

21 KWh worth of LifePo4 batteries, and 6000W of Victron inverting output later... it became a fun/expensive project.

SOK batteries are what I first considered, then the rack batteries hit the market.
I went with Signature Solar [signaturesolar.com] rack batts in the end.

About 150 of course depends on your battery size and how many hours you get sun.

Is it worth buying AcoPower 100w Polychrystalline for $65?
There's a video on the Will Prowse YT channel (great solar information, but the MOST Toxic community) showing how little difference there is between mono and poly on small setups.

However, the Acopower Monos have been that price several times recently. I would always choose Mono if there is no price difference Smilie

I've purchased those Acopower monos the last couple of times they were on sale and I can't see any production differences between them and any of the other 100 watt panels (renogy, bouge, rich, etc.)

Newbie here looking to mount solar on a small SUV roof rack. Do the 200 watt panels of similar size equate to two 100s in this deal? Or is it a problem of surface area?

a 200 watt panel will be slightly smaller than 2 100 watt panels because a small amount of space will be deducted for just having a single frame. All things being equal between the panels. A mono panel will be somewhat smaller than a Poly of the same wattage due to better efficiency.

I guess they make them, but it's rare to find a 200 watt panel that is a 12 volt like the 100 watt panels. Once you go that high, the panels are usually 24 or 36 volt. It's not necessarily an issue, but if the panel is 24 or 36 volts you'll need an MPPT controller that can handle that voltage. With a 12 volt panel(s) you can just use a cheap PWM controller like the Renogy Wanderer.

I've read a few forums regarding rack mounted panels. They mentioned wind noise and possible reduction of MPG due to drag. Obviously it's better to have them as low as possible.

Hope this helps/

I've read you should go with the 100 panels, as larger sizes are larger surface area that may catch the wind and will flex more breaking the internal cell connections. The 100W panels are the stiffest in a reasonable size. Also attach a safety cable so if/when they fly off the roof as you are driving 85mph down the highway, they don't go flying and kill people.

I bought the 2 pack and Amazon delivered just 1 panel.
I told the truck driver there should be 2 panels, but he said maybe it's on another truck, but there was only 1 shipping label.
Pretty annoying.
