My theory is the whole "they're being discontinued grab them now" was just a big marketing ploy
These "sales" have been on slickdeals for many years now. They're good headphones but nobody is paying $890 for them
It would greatly benefit the community if you can give examples of your bunch of headphones that may be as good. Thanks.
I have owned these. I have since climbed the ladder to the Utopias. These are awesome detailed headphones. I highly recommend at this price. Pair these with a good DAC like the Fio or similar and you will be a very happy listener.

I dont really have much experience with closed back headphones but the Sennheiser x Massdrop DT1770 is a pretty well rated main stream brand for a similar price.
DT1770 is a Beyerdynamic headphone, not Sennheiser. Do you mean the Massdrop x Beyerdynamic DT 177X GO? I've been curious about those, how has your experience been with them?
I got these sometime last year when they were on "sale". They've been by daily drivers in the office and I find myself preferring them to my HD6XX and HE560 v4. They sound better when paired with an amp.

My bad I swapped the two companies. I use the 990 pros for gaming and they're great for that. The big thing with Beyers is some people find their treble a bit too sharp/bright so would be good to try them if you can.

That's what I've heard and it's made me hesitant to try them as I'm somewhat sensitive to high frequencies, which is why my HE560s don't get too much love. I guess I'll continue to use my Elegias and keep fighting that itch to upgrade.

What would be a comparable model from a more mainstream brand?

These came out a while ago and at the time they were selling for $900. They've been since replaced by the Focal Celestee and been on sale for a while.
I bought mine when they were $400 and like them very much. The build quality is very good as is the performance. They are/were made in France.
Thanks for your feedback. Cheers.
