I was prescribed meclizine for severe dizziness. I guess it technically is effective for that purpose, in that I'm not dizzy if I'm completely unconscious, because that stuff knocks me completely out.
YMMV, of course, as each person is different, but I'd recommend trying one at home first before someone takes one while on vacation and ends up having to sleep the day off.
