That is incorrect. The 6600 XT is only slightly slower than a RTX 2080 at 1440p. It sits firmly between a RTX 2070 Super and a 2080. AMD drivers also improves significantly over time so it's possible that it's now faster than both at 1440p and lower resolutions.
1070ti is really closer to RTX 3050 performance. MSRP on 3050's is $249 but you can't get them today under like $320.
This 6600xt is about 80% of the price of a 1070ti from 2018 and its about 39% better.
This 6600XT at $360 is almost 75% better price/performance than a 1070ti at $450 in 2018.
Not going to argue with your info, but I disagree with the comparison to a 5-year-old product (10-series).
Should be compared to a 5700 XT, which launched at about the same msrp (~$400) as the 6600 XT with ~10% less performance (and the 5700 XT also often went on sale for $360).
In other words, this next-gen GPU from AMD gives just +10% performance for same cost, very pitiful.
Even taking inflation and "the times" into account, this card is a bust above $300. And of course, Nvidia is even worse. Screw them all, hold the line!

yeah I think I agree with you there.
I'd like to get this card under $300 by July.

It's not just this card, it's every single card this generation. The Nvidia equivalents 3060 and the 3060 Ti don't fair much better in terms of price/performance. I chalk it up to the 5700 XT being the exception in terms of value than anything else.
can't believe i spent $500+ on this . the pain…. lmfao
But how much enjoyment have you gotten out of it since purchasing earlier rather than waiting? If you used it at least 140 hours so far then it's only cost you a dollar an hour extra to enjoy or. Life is short, it's probably worth it.
I totally understand your feeling of wanting to get the best deal possible though! But it is also important to not beat yourself up about purchases, especially technology ones since the price is really never stable. Just enjoy the heck out of it until you decide to get something else or it stops working, lol.
How will a card like this handle VR? One of my kids wants a headset and since I'm building them PCs as a gift, I'd like to get a GPU that can handle it reasonably well.

Honestly if you're looking at the 6600 XT for VR, you should just get the Quest 2
