A hundred(-ish) dollar i3 is actually a great option for 1080p gaming now.

Yay progress!

Would be a deal if you can get a $50 motherboard but without it why would you bother with anything but a top of the line CPU

i mean, you can get a $90 decent h610 board that'll work fine. I think that's still a great value considering the stellar performance of the 12100(f)

$50 motherboards dont exist anymore for new launches. You wont see it from AMD/AM5 either. Inflation + component shortages put an end to cheap motherboards.

The point stands. A $100 quad-core CPU doesn't make that much sense when a full build is going to end up closer to $600 anyway. Might as well spring for the 12400(F), if not the 12600K.

And if you have a Micro Center, $135 for the 12400 is not a stretch at all.

In a gaming system this should be good enough to keep up with GPUs like up to RTX 3060 or below.

this CPU for under 100$ was posted a month or two ago. I agree with your position 100% since it was my complaint at the time. This CPU is very very good especially for the price. The problem is B660 motherboards are all over the place. Once your spending 50$ for ram and roughly 150$ for a motherboard, then spending an extra 20-40$ for 2 more cores and higher clock speed is a no brainer. If you could find a good board for 50-80$ this CPU would be a killer option....but those don't exist at the moment..

Just a heads up for anyone who isn't too familiar with Intel processors: the "F" at the end of the model number means this doesn't have integrated graphics (iGPU). That's fine if you have a video card, but if you are looking for a low-cost or compact solution without the need for a video card you'll need to look elsewhere.

Honestly the F SKUs don't make much sense to me if you can get the non-F integrated graphics version for $20-$30 more. Nice having the integrated graphics to install Windows and get everything configured if you're still shopping a GPU, and even more importantly, a few years down the road, the build could be repurposed for something else that doesn't require a dedicated GPU.

Who would've thought that an i3 would outperform an i7 of a few years prior.

The integrated GPU gets you Intel Quicksync.

No, at this level you may as well get a prebuilt.

First of all, unless you have a Micro Center next door, fuel costs these days kills the deal for any CPU. And you failed to mention that you need a coupon and a facebook account to obtain that coupon. Otherwise the CPU is $159.99 + tax.

The single thread score on the 12100F is outstanding, well more then people that do emails and causal web surfing would need. The only downside is that the chip is gimped by the exclusion of the GPU, which really makes no sense for this CPU. That said, for what this chip is, pretty nice considering the single core speed.
