I am not sure I understand the point you want your question to make. Is it that energy generation is inherently dirty? In the US, coal has been decreasing for a decade, renewable is increasing, and while we might still be burning petroleum, gas, or coal, we're not adding dirty capacity and 30% of capacity retired last year was coal capacity. By capacity, 70% planned in 2021 is wind and solar (16% natural gas, 11% batteries, 3% nuclear).

The electricity I use for my lawn mower can get cleaner and more efficient. The gas in a lawn mower can never get cleaner or more efficient. (Or not economically cleaner, there's only so much that can be done at a cost-reasonable level on a price-conscious consumer mower.)
Totally offtopic, but China and India won't end coal. They are increasing it. They mine 14 million tons a day and China added a new coal fired power plant each week all through the pandemic. Don't see why we need to make all the sacrifices when they do nothing. To the point of severe economic damage. This equipment is overly expensive as this thread has shown. Many cannot afford it. Sick of others getting a free pass all the time.

I have the Ego self-propelled for 1/3 of an acre. I can't do it all on one charge which is annoying. I used to only use it for the front yard because the back yard is uneven but with gas prices I'm now using for both. On uneven ground it has a tendancy to miss cutting some grass in the middle for some reason so I have to go over spots a few times and I'm worried it will wear it out sooner, but don't want to deal with the increased ethanol that the Biden admin authorized ruining my gas mowers (riding and push mower).
Get gas at a marina and you can even get alcohol free gas. Or a gas station with gas for hot rods.

I'm in Nebraska. Ethanol free is at most stations I go to.

edit: found this, https://www.pure-gas.org

edit, edit...: And I could get it delivered too, 150 gallon minimum. Used to, had a couple gas tractors. Then you could turn it in for off road/no tax.

Anyone have experience with about a half acre that is fairly hilly. We mulch, so I think that would help as we wouldn't be carrying the extra weight in the bag, but still unsure if we'd be able to mow fully on one charge. I'm pretty tired of the noise and the scratchy throat from mowing, though I think electric doesn't fully eliminate the throat as I'm sure the pollen comes into play.
I have a half acre that's slightly hilly and bumpy and the ego can't do it in 1 charge (7ah battery) using the self propelled feature maybe 20% of the time... the worse is tall, slightly damp grass, then I have to just break out the old gas lawn mower

FYI you could have simply just bought any bigger Oregon bar and chain...the 18" is $42 without a discount. If you had read the manual you would have known this. It's clearly stated. They don't recommend going over 22".

EGO is now selling Oregan bar chain oil with their label.
The 14" and older 16" used the same motor. The 18" and the new 16" are much more powerful.

I have had an Ego mower for 4 years. The self propel died on it and customer service was great. My local repair place stopped working on EGO, so Ego just sent me a new mower. Not even a refurb, an actual new one.
I have also had one for a while. I got the 21" self propelled with 7.5ah battery shipped from HD for $300! Anyway, this mower has been great. My only gripe is the blades are garbage and I have to replace them annually. But this mower is a champ. I use it to mow rental properties and I love that I can just fold it up and toss it in the trunk. I've had mine for just over 3 years.

Not worth my time, replacement blades are $25 and takes 5 minutes to install.

Do they have mower sales at the end of the season? Or is this the best it'll likely get?
I follow Ego deals and surprised to see these deals all spring. I got the RWD 7.5Ah over a month ago at this price and no regrets. Of course it helps if I make a $1/min on it.

There was a deal last week for $750 off $5k or something. I want that rider. Just found it, appliances only I guess. https://slickdeals.net/f/15799144-lowe-s-150-off-1499-300-off-1999-500-off-2499-750-off-5000-appliances?src=SiteSearch

I mean the grass is going to be pretty tall by the time a better deal comes along

China's 14th five-year plan, released a year ago, mandates flat coal consumption per year while increasing renewable consumption by 8% per year. It stops short of a official coal cap, but they may still decide on one.

You can sharpen the blades with a sanding flap disc on an angle grinder, it takes 5 minutes to do that which is less than it takes you to drive to the store (or even go online!) and get replacement blades.

My neighbor has an one of these Ego Mowers and it does a very excellent job of mulching.

On long grass with mulching you can hear the motor spin up to higher RPM, and it eats the battery extra fast. I takes the neighbor kid 2 full batteries to mow my 1/2 acre.

(my yard is a weird geometry being a corner lot, it's 1/2 acre including frontage but I cannot deck mow my yard due to the weird geometry.... right now I pay the neighbor kid $30 a week since it otherwise takes me 2.5 hours to do it.... money well spent)

The side discharge is very poor so if you like side discharge then skip it. It doesn't blow the clippings anywhere so it comes out in clumps.

It definitely mulches better than my Toro 22 inch Recycler mower.

Whataboutism at its finest Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)

Instead of using them as an excuse not to do anything, we should continue pushing for all nations to agree to reduce burning coal. Economics make the move compelling and money always wins out, for better or for worse.

I've used the same blade for 10 yrs by sharpening them. Takes a few minutes at the beginning of each season, but it's best to sharpen them before each use. That's $250 worth of blades you're throwing away vs a file and a few minutes of time each mow. Plus the mower cuts way cleaner and more efficiently with sharp blades. Dull blades rip the grass instead of cutting them.

I use Smith's pull-through knife sharpener which is super quick & easy. Pull it along each blade a few times and done. Electric mowers are especially convenient for blade sharpening because they can be turned over without spilling noxious oil & gas all over the place.
