People here need to realize that the real value of the drive is in the endurance specs. It's 3600 TBW. That means this drive can be overwritten 1800 times and it will still perform within spec. That's like filling this drive for everyday for 4.5 yrs. That's some insane psuedo enterprise-level specs. Even the WD Red NVMe SSD's that's advertised for NAS usage has 2500 TBW. It may not be a speed demon but it's an endurance demon for sure. Most of these drives will outlast the consumer electronics they are installed in. That's a good thing. Time will tell but this is hella good deal. The last time it was anywhere near this price was almost 5-6 months ago when Newegg had a surprise 25% coupon for SSD's and this was priced $250 at that time (effectively $187.5). BEWARE: this is a double-sided NVME. May not work for all slots. Do your research on slot clearances before you order.
For Gen 4 NVMe SSD in this size, I would say yes. AMD has been PCI-E GEN4 for a while, and only recently with Intel with the 11th Gen series (with 5x0 Motherboard and UP).
Also should be good for a PS5 (for speed requirements).
If you don't have those, there is no real advantage in speed over a cheaper ("slower") GEN3 NVMe SSD.
Any Gen 4 will work, regardless of how below the PlayStation specification it is. So far there's been absolutely no impact for in-game performance with any games tested. This could always change in the future, at which point you'd have to put the new game on the internal and the rest can safely stay on this expansion drive.
anyone know if this is just regular price? no coupon code, no %off listed, nothing. that's not like newegg. the drive is a few years old, which explains the price drop.

You don't have to have one for the PS5. It's recommended, but not 100% necessary. It doesn't get that hot. A lot of people have gone without a heatsink and reported no issues after a lot of use. Heatsinks can be found for cheap, though. So, it's not some big deal that this doesn't come with one. I got mine for $10.

5500 is just a recommendation. Not a requirement. You won't notice any difference at all. I have a 1TB WD Black SN750 SE with a speed of 3600 (the PS5 reads it at 3400) and it loads games just as fast as the stock one. There is no benefit from getting anything faster. No games use the full bandwidth of SSDs yet, and it's likely still an entire generation away before we start seeing games take advantage of the higher speeds. They load super fast as it is. Digital Foundry even tested a drive with a speed of 3200 and most of the time it was just as fast as the stock. On rare occasion it would take 1 second longer to load. There weren't any in-game hiccups or anything. Even if you had an SSD with a speed of 7000, it would only load games maybe 2 or 3 seconds faster than even my "slow" one. It's a software thing, rather than hardware. All the power/speed in the world doesn't matter if the games aren't told to use it. It's like how the PS5 is powerful enough to run every PS4 game at 60fps, but almost all of them still run at 30fps. They haven't been patched to take advantage of the hardware.

I appreciate it. I try to get the word out so people can save some money. I wish Sony would do away with the 5500 recommendation. Too many people have wasted too much money.
I got my SSD on sale for $75 from GameStop, about a month or two ago. Meanwhile other people have spent $200-$300 on SSDs that don't load games any faster than mine. I understand if people want to future proof, but based on how quickly games already load, that future is still pretty far off. I don't see games using those higher speeds until the next generation.

and there's very few reviews. the 4KQD1 is really all i care about, and it's unimpressive on this drive. i think i'll get the samsung 980 pro refurb instead from BB.
when you say not that fast, are you copying to another faster nvme drive, or just basing off of synthetic numbers? and are you using a pcie 4.0 board?

Sony is just trying to pretend to be an elite here, ALL gen 4 ssd will work in PS5.
Excellent deal I knew when I got my Samsung 980 pro thet one day it will be cheaper drive. I got mine at 299 without heat sink which was perfect for me now this is a hell of a deal for my ps5.
If you haven't get one, this is an excellent price even without heat sink which are only 10-20 dollars more.
Is it for laptops ? I have Dell laptop G15 i5-11400 with 8 GB RAM 512GB SSD and Nvidea 3050ti. Got it for Thanks Giving. I want to upgrade my laptop memory and add additional SSD. Any suggestions please . I also have 2 year coverage on the laptop and want to know if any upgrade will waive that off.
Be careful. There's an ongoing issue with the G15 as well as other Dell models that share that mobo/chipset. It doesn't seem to want to recognize and run at PCIE Gen4x4. Best case it downgrades the speed to 3x4. Worst case it doesn't detect at all or if it does at a random time after boot the drive will disappear from the system and require a reboot.
