They removed the backup at original quality (except for the OG 2016 Pixels). Backup at storage saver (compressed quality) is available for life for the Pixel 2 - 5, but not for any newer Pixels after that.

What do u use/method to transfer photos from your phone/cameras to Pixel 1 ?
There are 2 ways to do this:
1. Connect the Google Pixel to a computer. I have a Mac so I use Android File Transfer. It's buggy and sometimes I will have to restart my computer. You can drag and drop files once you go into the Camera folder.

2. Transfer the images/videos onto a USB-C stick and plug it into the Google Pixel. After that it's the same as above, just copy the file onto the Camera folder of the Pixel.

The Pixel will automatically upload the file in the cloud. You will need to clean up to delete the already uploaded files so you can do more.

There are perks with these phones.

Google offers storage for free on Pixel 3a, Pixel 4, Pixel 4 XL, Pixel 4a, Pixel 4a 5G, and Pixel 5. The offer is active for the life of the device.
It was canceled last year for original images. I think compressed ones are still unlimited

What's not to like with the 2 XL?
Right.. Got in on 2XL for 150 as well. Daily driver till now and I like it. Battery lasts for a day (not a heavy user, just regular use). No qualms about it.

Will wait for 6a to come out, hopefully that l push 5 down a bit more.

Sorry guys, this might be a stupid question. When they say that the older phones will stop receiving updates soon, does that mean they won't get the newest Android OS releases, and consequently many of the apps will stop working eventually because they require you to update (ie banking apps)? I'm just asking because nearly all my past phones have been rendered useless at some point due to updates (my current phone has battery life of 1-2 hours after updating to Android 12)

I think they canceled that
You are mistaken, though kudos on recieving so many thumbs up for the misinformation. Pixels 2-5 (including XL and A models) recieve high quality photos backup for the life of the device.

They "canceled that" as in the Pixel 6 and newer do not have unlimited storage for either quality option. You have to upload from a Pixel 5 or older device.

From Google: [google.com] (under "Pixel storage info")

Important: If you have a Pixel 5 device or earlier, your current backup options and benefits remain unchanged. Photos and videos backed up in Storage saver quality (previously named High quality) from your Pixel 2 through 5 devices will continue to receive unlimited storage at no cost. However, as of June 1, 2021 any new photos or videos you back up from other devices in Storage saver quality will count toward your Google Account storage.
That means photos and videos saved in Storage Saver, uploaded now and forever in the future, are still unlimited. The photos/video do not have to be taken on the Google Pixel device, but they must be saved on the Google Pixel device and the Storage Saver option must be saved on the Google Photos account it's backing up to. Storage Saver reduces anything larger than 16MP to 16MP, and compresses anything larger than 1080p video to 1080p video. The photo compression is pretty good and it's hard to tell a difference in image quality. Video compression is a bit harsher if you use high bitrates.

If you need Original Quality backups, you can buy a Google Pixel 1 which continues to recieve original quality backup for the life of the device.

I've been in these Pixel threads a long time on SlickDeals before I bought one for myself. I bought a Pixel 3 and when they took Original Quality away I migrated to the older Pixel 1, so feel free to ask questions or search for yourself.

Mostly got it, but the 5a does not have unlimited photo backup. 5a is actually newer than 5. 5a has an extra year of updates over 5 but with that misses the cutoff for grandfathered unlimited photo backups.

It's better to just buy Google One and store at ORIGINAL quality. That's what I do. I take a TON of photos and 4k videos and only around 200gb is photos.

I was doing this before ever getting a Pixel.

Also get better customer support and 10% credit on each Google store purchase

Correct. If they're unlocked you can play with rooting them but yes, they're not getting 3 more years on an already 3.5 year old phone

I have two Pixel 1s in high quality I bought on Swappa at $47 apiece to do this but since I already have the 2TB Google One plan that I use for EVERYTHING, I haven't even taken the time.

Super tempted - these can be rooted to install Calyx or Graphene privacy focused distributions. Can't justify it just to play around though.

Every 6 month I transfer all the stuff I need to transfer onto a folder on the pc. Than connect my pixel 2 and transfer that folder inside dcim folder. The next time I delete the folder and repeat.

This is also the only use for my pixel šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚
