I went through 3 of this model over the winter ebay/Microsoft refurbished. One had a yellowish screen tint, one kept rebooting randomly, one had terrible light bleed from the keyboard. Those were all $580 at time. Lower you expectations and this will be a decent machine. The screen is the pony here.

Ryzen mobile can be overclocked or underclocked. Ryzen controller is pretty cool. The chip is 15w tdp typically. But they can vary between 15-25w. But what's cool about setting it to 15w is, it will be slightly slower but significantly cooler running. And more energy efficient

That's what I thought. The ryzen 4000 series is way better than the 3000, but I don't think 3000 would be bad unless your use case is gaming/video editing, etc.

Are there any larger negatives of the 3000 ryzen processor to be aware of? I feel like most things I read online are that as soon a processor is not new it's garbage. Thanks

Just a note surface devices hardware has been pretty finicky and non replaceable for a while. I have been responsible for a couple hundred of these over the years and the failure rate has been pretty high. More battery failures than any other brand since 2000s Sony battery issues and generally non replaceable. Also ryzen mobile 3000 equals 4th gen Intel, ryzen 4000 competes with modern stuff.

I have the 13.5" i7, 16GB, 512GB SSD version of this laptop and had it over a year. One of the best Laptops I've owned. The AMD version might not be iffy but the price and bigger screen might make this a huge bargain. Mine was over $2k.

To be fair, R5 3580U is on Zen+ architecture, which was introduced back in 2018. Intel's 10th gen was introduced back in 2019 (AMD's Zen 2 was also introduced in 2019). So, you are basically comparing a year older architecture to Intel.

From Intel's 4th gen all the way to 9th gen, the incremental improvement was 2-5% in each generation; AMD was "asleep". Then AMD came out with the Zen (Ryzen) architecture, and things (both Intel and AMD) started to have 10%+ incremental improvement per generation. Maybe that's why you are hearing "if it's not new, it's garbage".
